And AGon's OPS+ with the Dodgers was 119.

Not enough to make me pine for keeping him, and the biggest reason for the deal was to shed CC and Beckett's contracts.

It was a good choice "letting him go." We won a ring, afterwards, thanks partly to the money freed up by that trade.

Good thing the Sox won a ring because the Dodgers gave us back NOTHING in that deal. The best player we got back turned out to be James Loney…

The salary relief was mammoth. Couldn't have expected much from the talent dregs they threw in to call it a "trade".

So when do you think the sox will reach .500?

He barely cancelled out Punto!

The salary releif worked wonders.

Probably 2023.

Wow, you honestly believe they won't get their heads above water till next season? Does that mean you are expecting a fire sale?

Yes, I am expecting a fire sale.

Interesting, who do you think will be jettisoned? Do you devers will be sent packing too?

The only guy I'm sure won't be jettisoned is Devers.

Why is that? If you are going to have a fire sale I would think he'd bring back the biggest haul.

Of course he would. But:

a) I think there's a very good chance they sign him to an extension, with all the money that's coming off the books.

B) The current ownership has always shown some sense of trying to please the fans. They know a fire sale will piss off a lot of people. Including Devers in it would be torch and pitchfork stuff. If they're going to do that they might as well sell the team. And I don't think that's the plan.

Agreed, and if they can't sign Devers, they can spread out the misery by trading him this winter or the next deadline.

I doubt the SOX FO will fire Sale.

I'm not sure there'd be any takers for Sale at his contract price.

It occurs to me that they might not be able to trade Bogey, because he actually still has 3 more years on his contract after this, if he doesn't exercise the opt-out. The only reason he wouldn't exercise it is injury. But that would put the team who acquires him in a risky position.

The Red Sox are stuck with Sale for better, or worse until his contract is up, and deservedly so since they extended an injured player.

I think most teams would take that risk. Xander has been very healthy and very productive for a long time.

I doubt they trade him anyway. The return on rental position players isn’t always that great and they might find the extra exclusive negotiating time and potential comp pick to be more valuable than any offers they get.

Lou Merlonii does think they’ll work out a deal before he opts out FWIW…

In 2019, he somehow struck out 218 guys while injured...

(Yes, I know very well there were justifiable injury concerns.)

Come on now. What team doesn’t want to pay $55mill for the exclusive privilege of putting Sale on the IL for the bulk of 2023-24?

Agreed. The acquiring team might also ask for one of those fancy negotiating windows that are sometimes allowed.

That was also 3 years and one TJ surgery ago…

Sounds good to me.
