But not completely at the expense of competing in the current season. That's the balance Bloom is trying to strike.

Sale is done for the year. Wacha is out. Hill is out. A good GM needs to weight the options. Is this a team that can win it all? If not, you don't play just to make a run at the playoffs.

The priority is long term sustainability, but that doesn't mean completely punting away the present. It's not running out the clock just to see Xander for 2 more months. It's keeping the Red Sox in contention and getting them into the playoffs.

This team can't beat an AL East team in the regular season. What is going to happen in the playoffs? It's a waste to let these guys walk away for nothing.

I am not happy with the way this year has gone , but I never like to give up on a season. I despise having three wild cards . It is money grabbing , gimmicky and diminishes the regular season . There will be playoff teams that don't deserve to be there. But if that is our only shot , then go for it. Don't sell off. Add Josh Bell and a first rate closer or set up man. Then hope for the best. Anything is possible.

Last year's team didn't look that great going into the playoffs.

Last year they could actually win a series against the AL East here or there.

What is wrong with making a run in the playoffs?

Tampa and Toronto are a combined 7-15 vs the Yankees and therefore cannot win a series against them. This means neither team can win it all. Should both be sellers?

I said "making a run AT the playoffs." I don't think this team can make a run IN the playoffs. They can't win a series against a good team. They just can't.

Red Sox expiring contracts: Xander, Eovaldi, JD, Vazquez, Kiké, Wacha, Hill, Strahm, Davis

Rays expiring contracts: Kiermaier (team option), Zunino, Kluber, Wisler

Jays expiring contracts: Stripling, Romo

The core of the Rays and Jays is intact beyond 2023. The Red Sox are in a state of flux with a ton of players leaving at the end of the year. Does it make more sense for the Sox to just let the players go without getting anything back for them? That doesn't make business sense to me. That's just my opinion. Other posters want to take a chance on another postseason run, believing that it's all just a crapshoot and this team has as good a chance as any other team. I just don't see it that way. I think there is a greater impetus for this year's Sox to sell than the Jays or Rays or any other recent Sox team. It's a unique case.

But the core of those teams isn’t good enough anyway, and teams can trade contracts besides the expiring ones. Should the Jays go heavy on Soto? The status quo isn’t good enough now. Why will it be next year?

The Jays core isn't good enough? They won last year's trading deadline? They won the offseason? I keep hearing about all the young talent they have. Is this not the case?

They’re 4-8 against the Yankees. By your argument they can’t beat them and are just hoping to make a run in the playoffs

Here's a fun example on what's being talked about.

In the 2007 regular season the Yankees swept Cleveland 6-0, outscoring them 49-17.

In the 2007 ALDS Cleveland beat the Yankees 3-1.

That Cleveland team won 96 games. Are these Red Sox going to win 96 games? If so, then yes, they should be buyers...................

The attempted point was about head to head records.

Well, you're saying we're toast because we can't beat the other teams in the AL East in the regular season.

Ok, so could the Cleveland Guardians of 2007 beat the other AL Central teams? As the division winner, I bet they probably could.

I think we’ve all resigned to the fact that the Sox are not winning the AL East. But the only team in the East that scares me in the postseason is Toronto, and that’s due to the vaccination status of a couple key players…

They haven't stacked up well against any of the teams in the East, not even the Orioles.

The mvp of this season for the Red Sox could very well end up being the training staff. We have had a ton of injuries.

However, when relatively healthy, we were a top 5 American league team.

Any time your team is fielding 4 triple a starters and 3 triple a position players, against the likes of Tampa and New York, your record will suffer.

The biggest question is how quickly our pro roster will get healthy? Could answer if we are buyers or sellers in the next 10-12 days!

I think the Sox would get smoked by the Rays and Yanks in the postseason. I don't know how Toronto will play down the stretch. Young ballclub, new manager, lots of variance.

Frankly, I thought we'd get smoked by the Rays in the 2021 postseason.

I think the 2021 Red Sox, who led the division for a long time until a late swoon, were a really good team and much better than the 2022 version. This team has just shown very little fight. I'm not a believer.

Head to head competition means almost nothing when it comes to the postseason. I understand not wanting to let guys walk away for nothing, but I can't get on board with quitting on the team when they are right in the hunt with almost half the season to go.

I agree that the Sox have to go for it, not that I believe Bloom ever had any intention of adding big at the deadline. For me, going for it means not selling key players more than it means adding huge acquisitions. I do think Bloom will try very hard to upgrade at 1B and in the pen.
