Is it possible that Houck, who has shown himself quite capable of 3-5 inning mow-downs, could be wasted as a 'conventional closer'?

They both have a lot to prove period. Houck at times looks lights out, and then loses it all of a sudden. I think he needs another pitch to be effective as a starter, and just has to be more consistent. Whitlock had a good season, but that is only doing it for 1 season, and only went a couple innings at a time most times given 3-4 days between appearances, so he’ll have to show what he can do going 5 innings. I think he needs another pitch to be an effective starter as well, so I think the jury is still out on him after just 1 year.

Agreed.

He had like 3 starts in '20 and missed some of '21. Houck's got great stuff and seems to be working on building up his third pitch, but he's so damn good as a 2-5 inning RP'er, in an era where that is becoming more and more important and valuable.

Whitlock looks more like a starter, to me, but he still has to prove he can do that, and I worry we'll mess him up be trying to convert him back to a starter.

He might be able to be a bit more than a 1 inning "conventional closer."

Maybe he could give us 80-90 innings closing out games or coming in when needed most.

It is possible, but I think it might be a bit risky from the Sox to put both Whitlock and Houck in the rotation. I prefer neither, but I do believe at least one will make the jump.

In their brief careers, both have shown to be elite relievers while questions remain about them as starters. Moving both to the rotation not only raises those questions but also might raise questions about whoever replaces them in the bullpen. While certainly sometimes the answer to these questions is a resounding "f*** yes!", I still like the idea of simply not having those questions at all...

I actually fully expected you to be either flabbered or gasted, but not the combination of the two...

Good thing I didn't go with the compound dumbfounded then!

This is blatant plagiarism.

Yes, I blatantly plagiarized the sentiments I have been expressing since, like, July...

Oh I would never have expected anything from you to be founded. ;)

After I wrote this in June... LOL.

I was talking about July of 2020. Sure we did not have Whitlock back then, but the WAPM foresaw it ... ;)
