I notice Richards leading both lists, if you hold them upside down. He needs to stay in the BP until his option is paid out. The one who should be embarrassed by Moon's list is Erod in a contract year.

ERod missed the whole 2020 season with COVID, and it wasn't just a mild case. He had serious issues, including heart problems. I'm not sure "embarrassed" is a good word to us, and besides, he has a 3.93 ERA over his last 15 starts. (3.32 FIP)

And yet I read so many posts here that want to give E-rod a QO. Makes no sense.

ERod is not bad when he has command of four pitches and when his changeup is sharp. In three starts this month, he went 6 @ Seattle giving up 1 earned run, went 6 at Tampa giving up 0 runs, and went 3.2 vs. the Rays giving up 6.

I'm not ready to advocate keeping him, but also am not ready to write him off.

It's a close call.

He's done very well his last 15 starts.

The team wins when he starts and has since 2018.

A QO is just a one year investment.

Peripheral stats say E-Rod has pitched a lot better than his ERA and has been victimized by our terrible D.

My peripheral non-stats say that ERod fully deserves lousy defense because he takes too long and basically refuses to defend his own position, especially when it requires him to cover 1b on a grounder to the right.

ERod is worth defending, but he also needs to watch that other Sox lefty starter to learn about how to be a professional MLB pitcher.

His nibbling pitches and overall lack of apparent intensity about the work make him seem lazy or not wanting to get involved. If you were looking for a #4 , make him a QO, not much to lose if he goes. For a guy who should/could be your #2.5 , I would not go big contract, that being anything over 3 years/$40MM

If ERod has lasting effects from Covid, a $19M/1 deal might be better than $40M/3.

On behalf of Hunter R., I still advocate enclosing the Fenway triangle in deepest center field . No question that the Sox hit more balls there than any one opposing team.

It would only be worth it, if it was more than all the other teams combined, right?

You would hope that the medical experts can test heart function and capacity sufficiently to rule out or confirm long term problems with cardiac issues

You caught my effort to slip that by !

I do not think he would be starting for the Sox all season long if there were/are any heart issues of any kind.

The issues are his effectiveness/professionalism. When he has command, when his changeup is sharp, and when he doesn't need to rely on his fastball, he can be pretty effective. I have doubts about his professionalism in terms of defending his position, covering first on grounders to his right, not taking a long time between pitches, etc.

Of course, but so little is know of long term covid affects and there is plenty of evidence that some people feel totally better, then get weak and tired again.

I'm not saying ERod may relapse, but it is probably a concern.

I do know, ERod is a winner.

The Sox win when he pitches, and we may have the best record with him pitching since 2018 than any other ML pitcher and team in MLB.

That being said, I know wins are team stats, but ERod almost always does what it takes to keep us close enough to win.

I'd offer the QO, but would not be upset, if he turns it down and we get a sandwich pick. If he takes it, it might be an overpay, but it's just a one year gamble.

I'm not saying it's a slam dunk choice, but it's not an easy one, either.
