Per Rotoworld, the Padres are close on Scherzer…

Houck performance last night and age may be reasons along with prospect Haul .I still say we need Rizzo not only for the bat and D but his fit personality wise .I would love to see Devers and Rizzo just the joy they share for the game .

I'll cherry-pick the worst time frame for Richards and Perez (June 5 to today).

Here are the rankings and names of the worst starters by ERA- since June 5th (20 + IP)... (Note how many are on contenders and have been even worse than our 2- some worse for much longer than June 5th.)

Ranking out of 143 SP'ers with 20+ IP)

102 Matz (TOR) 119

103 Cueto (SFG) 120

104 Pivetta (BOS) 120

108 Darvis (SDP) 125

109 Peterson (NYM) 125

111 A Nola (PHI) 127

112 Perez (BOS) 131

113 Walker (NYM) 132

118 German (NYY) 136

122 Gonzalez (SEA) 142

123 M Moore (PHI) 143

126 Paddack (SDP) 153

130 Richards (BOS) 159

133 Snell (SDP) 165

136 Velazquez (PHI) 171

137 C Martinez (STL) 177

We are not the only contenders with struggling starters or the worst struggling starters, since June.

With Scherzer going to the Padres, that leaves only one SP upgrade on the market: Berrios. Kyle Gibson would be an upgrade too if you think his numbers are sustainable (debatable point).

Jon Gray= not an upgrade but a sideways move IMO.

One sign of how badly many starting pitchers are doing this year, even on good teams, is that I have to lower the IP number to 50 to get a sample size of 145 SP'er. (5 per team)

Here's how our struggling SP'ers rank in ERA- over the whole season compared to some contending team starters:

ERA- Bottom Rankings (#1 is the worst in MLB.)

2. C Martinez 158

3. D Bundy 157

5. J Sheffield 155

9. D Peterson 143

13. B Snell 137 (Do the Rays know their s*** or not?)

17. Velazquez 133

18. M Gonzalez 131

20. C Paddack 130

22. G Canning 128

24. A Heaney 122

31. R Stripling 119

38. ERod 116 (doing better recently)

40. Richards 114

42. Yarbrough 112

43. Odorizzi 111

48. A Nola 107

51. F Montas 104

54. D Smyly 103

55. Cueto 103

56. Matz 103

57. Eflin 102

59. Keuchel 102

60. Taillon 100

63. Pivetta 100

(plenty at 90-91)

Do this:

1. Hosmer & top 5 Padres prospect to the Red Sox as the Red Sox flex their big market muscle by bailing out the Padres.

2. Top 5 Padres prospect and G.Jimenez to the Twins for Berrios (the Twins are a little thin on outfield prospects and will likely lose Buxton after the 2022 season).

While I completely agree acquiring a good starter would be best, a reminder--

The Sox can lose/demote/bullpen two starters and still have Sale, Eovaldi, Pivetta, Houck, and one of ERod/Perez/Richards.

The Sox have played .600 ball so far this season while relying heavily on Eovaldi, Pivetta, ERod, Perez, and Richards. Why? Because of good hitting, a good bullpen, and a good manager.

Scherzer to the Padres apparently

Players agreed upon. Medicals pending. Scherzer must stamp his approval. The weasel has left the henhouse..

Not surprised the Sox didn’t get Scherzer. I don’t think Bloom is all in on 2021. The system needs time to mature and I don’t think the Sox anticipate being able to hang with CWS or HOU. Sox are under the cap this year too. My bet is the Sox see what they have on Sale and Houck for next year then make focused veteran additions to make a title run next year

Great info and eye popping .With this info I’m very thankful to see Houcks stuff play so well .Sale coming back is tempered a bit for me .Houck Sale Pivetta Erod Perez rotation seems solid to me but would I jump at the chance at Berrios ? I would if we can keep Downs Casas here .

You say stuff like that every year.

While HOU and CWS are both very good, the Sox are still tied with Houston for best record in the AL. Why is Bloom supposed to disregard that?

They didn’t get Scherzer for one very likely reason - San Diego still has a much better farm with more prospects…

It also shows how the Sox and other contenders need SP'ing.

I still think some contender would take Richards off our hands (we pay most of his contract) and would trade for Perez, if we pay part of his deal.

Add Sale and maybe Houck.

Trade for an upgrade over Perez. It does not have to be someone like Scherzer or even Gibson or Berrios.

Maybe add a pen arm, but unless we trade Richards and Perez, adding 2 pitchers by trade, means demoting or DFA'ing someone decent. It would have to be an upgrade over P Valdez, Sawamura or DHern.

Eovaldi

Sale

Trade

ERod

Pivetta

Houck

Barnes

Ottavino

Whitlock

Taylor

DHern

Sawamura

P Valdez

Not sure Downs has the value he once had. He’s been abysmal in aaa this year

Jax just stop it’s pretty obvious what your doing and sadly That s*** stain over in NY is still managed by guess who ?

I’m hoping Gray signs with the Yankees next year. Scooping power pitchers out of Colorado could be useful

Jon Gray may not be great, but he's an upgrade over many pitchers in MLB.

I'd love to get him, this year.

I went to fangraphs to look for the best SP'ers that might be on non contending teams. I set the parameter at 110 IP from 2020-2021. The best ERA- pitchers. A bit surprisingly, hardly any of the best are on teams out of it.

31. Trevor Rogers MIA

36. John Means BAL

39. Jose Berrios MN

40. Strasburg WSN

42. Hendricks CHC

44. Castillo CIN

46. J Ross WSN

47. G Marquez COL

50. Jon Gray COL

51. Pineda MN

82. K Gibson TX (95)

Food for thought

Rizzo - OPS+ 116

Schoop - OPS+ 120

Plus, Schoop can play 2B

OPS+ since 2020:

119 Schoop

111 Rizzo

91 Dalbec

2019-2021

126 Rizzo

112 Schoop

Schoop is a terrible defender though,

Fangraphs has his UZR/150 at -5.8, which is worse than Rizzo’s -1.6.

BTV suggests Schoop (1.6) would be much easier to acquire than Rizzo (8.6), for what that’s worth…
