It surprised the TV announcers too, but it is that stupid 3 rd time through the order metric that managers implement automatically regardless of whether the pitcher is cruising.

Ya fair enough. And at the end of the day, we need more runs. 1 friggin run isn’t going to get it done on most nights haha.

Should Cora have left Perez in his last game into the 6th inning?

He was "cruising" with 5 IP, 3 H and 1 ER. Sound familiar? In the 6th he let up 3 singles and we went from tied 1-1 to down 3-1.

How about his start before the last one? 5 IP 4H and 0 ER (cruising even better than tonight), then comes the 6th: Reach on Error and HR, and we're down 3-1, instead of tied 1-1.

His 6th inning ERA is 20.25.

I'm okay with being against it, but "makes no sense?"

Had they left him in and lost the lead, we'd be posting these numbers and saying it makes no sense leaving him in.

With Perez, it's not the 3rd time through: it's the 6th inning. (Same with Pivetta, except Pivetta sucks third time through.)

ERA

0.00 5th inning

20.25 6th innings

OPS Against

.687 first time

.858 second time

.451 third time

Pivetta

3.00 ERA in 5th

15.00 in 6th

.539 first PA

.440 second

1.125 third

Can we just start the rally by cutting both Franchy and Bobby totally cooked and waste of roster spaces.

Do you know what the word "cut" means? You should. We've told you over an over, yet you keep saying it.

Cut = DFA

In my opinion, when a pitcher is cruising through 5 you leave him in regardless of his track record. Doesn’t matter, bats were ice cold and we deserved to lose. Such be life.

I'm not arguing we should have taken him out. My point is about it "not making sense." His history shows he falters after 5 IP. There is some sense in the idea of taking him out.

Had we done so his previous two games, we might have 2 more wins.

Perez has been a bigger surprise than Pivetta, in my eyes.

Without these two, we'd be bummin' out and likely at each other's throats.

We host the A's coming up, while the Yanks travel to Tampa and the Jays to Atlanta.

This week could be telling.

Not shock at all. Can they ever get a sweep? Now they get a big home series against a very good As team right now.

It's hard to sweep 4 vs anyone.

We've been swept once (first series vs BAL).

We have 3 sweeps (v TB and @ BAL- both 3 game series & 2 @ NYM.)

We have won 3 of 4 twice (@MN & @BAL) and split 2 4 game series (CWS & SEA).

We won 2 of 3 vs DET.

We split a 2 game series with TOR.

We've lost just two series, all year (the second was 3 of 4 @TEX).

Good news today: Perez was pitching above his pay grade!

Bad news today: we just could not solve Lopez! It wasn’t that Lopez had great stuff, it was more of him hitting his spots and we just could not square anything up. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to your opponent!

The jays smoked Atlanta last series and it wasn’t even close. We need to win against Oakland.

I can see Atlanta turning the tides on the Jays, but this A's series will not be easy.

I'm pulling for the Rays, too.

Thanks, moonslav, for the nice 4 game run which was much needed.

Tonight the better pitching won, simple as that.

A's and Angels at Fenway likely to be tough, but that's OK. You only get to stay in first place the old-fashioned way. You earn it.

I gave it my best, Max.

I'm hoping someone can top your 9 game streak. Maybe that starts, tomorrow.

Yup moon had a nice run! Tomorrow is not going to be an easy contest.

The A's remind me a lot of the Rays. It looks like smoke and mirrors, but after years of doing this, you gotta respect what they do.

Now, that being said, let's beat the bastids over the head!

Posted

The A's have 7 guys with over 90 PAs, and nobody over .870.

.870 Matt Olden

.809 R Laureano

.779 Jed Lowrie (Yes, Jed is their third best hitter.)

.777 Mark Canha

.713 Matt Chapman

.699 Sean Murphy

.414 Elvis Andrus

Mitch Moreland has 90 PAs and a .654 OPS. Piscotty is next at 84 and .654.

Their pitching relies heavily on 3 starters:

3.07 Sean Manaea

3.29 Cole Irvin

3.70 Chris Bassit

Their other two have sucked:

5.50 Frank Montas (Sound familiar?)

5.79 Jesus Luzardo (1.606 WHIP)

Their pen?

IP ERA Pitcher

21 0.87 Y Petit

19 3.86 L Trevino

15 2.40 J Diekman (L)

14 3.21 D Guerra

12 4.38 JB Wendelken (on IL)

12 7.30 S Romo

Nothing really jumps out at you as being all that impressive, except the 3 top starters and the 21-15 record, but that's what the A's do.

Too bad the SOX can't bat against their own BP, instead of Baltimore's better BP.

Also, didn't understand the removing of Perez with low pitch count plus his being effective, but I won't criticize the manager because that would be blasphemous on this thread.

Actually, Cora could have let Perez start the 6th and then pulled him if anyone got on. Baseball 101.

Oh well, can't win 'em all, but this game was certainly winnable.

You don't think Cora is a good manager. Most Sox fans think he is. It's just the way it is. Fans often disagree about managers and their moves.

I disagree with you about Cora, but it doesn't mean I don't think you're a knowledgeable baseball fan. You are.

With regard to pulling Perez, this is the way Baseball 101 is now. The 3-4-5 hitters were due up for the Birds, for the third time, and they're all righty hitters.

And "pulling him if anyone gets on" isn't really a great strategy in a tie game, is it? If the first guy homers we lose anyway.

It's all just opinions though.

Yes, he could have. His first "man on" could also have been an HR.

Again, I'm not arguing he should have yanked him. I'd have probably left him in, but I didn't have all the facts, either.

My point was only about taking him out making NO sense. There was some "sense" involved in yanking him. Perez sucks in the 6th inning.

BTW, while our pen has struggled recently, they have done a fine job, this year.
