After all the success JD Martinez had batting cleanup...why does this team want to put him back in the number 3 spot? He struggled to hit in the number 3 spot last year...Why not put him back where he succeeded and I feel was more comfortable hitting???

He struggled last year because his swing was a mess and he couldn't watch video during the games to prep. It had nothing to do with the batting order.

My understanding is Cora wants solid on base guys with speed in the first couple of spots and then lineup some power hitters behind. There is also a general desire to alternate left and right hand batters to prevent easy pitching moves by opponents. If he was talking about Verdugo and Hernandez leading the order, I suppose 3,4 and 5 would consist of Bogaerts, Martinez and Devers in some order. Not a bad list to choose from and it hard to go wrong in any order.

The top of the lineup should be very solid as long as Xander is healthy. I can't quibble too much with batting order.

When the performance of batters is static, the order in which they bat is not that important. In particular, while there was a slight difference when trying to form a bad lineup, the two reasonable lineups yielded the same results in a large sample. Thus, when trying to optimize a lineup, the emphasis should be placed on gaining advantages with particular batter-versus-pitcher matchups — the goal of which would be to maximize the performance of each player rather than worry about who goes to the plate the most often.

I've always felt this way, especially with lefty-righty splits.

The problem with individual match-ups is the tiny sample sizes most head-to-head match-ups are.

I guess you could generalize that so and so hits fastball pitchers better than so and so.

But now you have so many 'opener' games and 'bullpen games' and 'starting pitcher gets yanked after twice through the order' games. So you can't really plan as much for matchups.

I don't think the opener and bullpen game strategies have caught on as much around the league...

I don't follow all the teams, but the Red Sox, Yankees and Dodgers all seem to have bought into the concept. The Yankees infamously tried it in the postseason, and the Dodgers used it as well.

It mentions that in the rest of the article.

Whats going on with Xander now? He'd probably be a better number 3 hitter

Ok, well Bogarts will probably be the number 3 hitter when the season starts...then JD and Devers

I think that's exactly how the lineup should read though
