I think you might be a little quick on the draw, writing him off after 540 PA's, the equivalent of one season, with a 728 OPS.

But skepticism certainly appears to be warranted.

He has made zero adjustments since getting called up. He had an amazingly hot stretch at the beginning of 2019 which is greatly skewing his numbers.

This makes no sense. This isn't even a coherent argument. Dalbec hasn't had the swoon that Chavis has gone through. Chavis has had a 671 OPS since 5/5/19. That's more indicative of his future success than his PAs before the scouting report got out on him.

I think Dalbec is perfectly capable of an equal swoon. Even with his hot start, he has shown he has a lot more swing and miss in his game than Chavis had. And as pitchers make some adjustments to Dalbec, such a swoon is certainly a possibility.

Like I said, I am not wild about Chavis, but his swoon consists of 480 PA spread out over 2 seasons. I think it's a bit early to say he cannot and will not ever adjust to anything...

Well, we can have that discussion about Dalbec when the time comes. I don't think Dalbec is going to play 2b this year so my argument at the beginning was not comparing the two of them, but rather Chavis vs Arroyo.

Chavis and Arroyo are equal levels of crapshoot. I only give Arroyo the advantage due to defense...

As do I. I think he's just the placeholder until they find a competent replacement (Downs???).

Profar got 7M AAV BTW. I'd pass.

If the IKs (Interest Kings) went "hard" after Profar for somewhere in the 7M range, it probably means they won't be paying Semien twice that. Marcus made 13M last year.

Dalbec also has had a much higher OBP his whole career- minors included, and plays much better D.

He may "swoon," but he's got more tools than Chavis has or Middy had.

Semien just doesn't feel like a fit for this team. If he's available a month from now, maybe you can get him on a cheap deal? IDK.

If I signed him, it would be for SS. It doesn't make sense to move Bogey to 2B or 3B or to sign this guy and take away one of his assets by playing him at 2B.

If we want to spend larger at 2B, sing Wong or La Stella.

I'd rather Wong anyway.

I don't think spending over $2-4M on 2B is worth spending less on pitching, or even CF.

I'm not sure we want to go more than a 1 year deal anyway, since Dwons may be ready, next year.

We also have a lot of current players who are ML ready and can play 2B- maybe one shines brighter than expected:

Arroyo

Chavis

Arauz

Munoz (not currently on 40 man roster)

Munoz would be an interesting option for UTIL.

I don't think we see Arauz in BOS again.

I think Downs could work out, but there are still a bunch of variables that could cause him to flame out pretty quick.

I don't disagree, but with so many options, and only one needing to work out, I don't think we should sign any 2Bman to more than a 1 year deal.

Someone like Kike Hernandez for 2 years at a relatively low cost would be fine, to me.

hell yes.. Downs might pull us a good arm!

I wouldn't expect an amazing return, but it could be selling high on Downs.

Not a bad idea.

Can we trade him for Kenta Maeda? We could throw in C Wong.

The issue of course is what team would want Downs and be willig to ive up a SP for him.

Per BTV, he has a similar trade value to Aaron Civale (Cle), Trevor Rogers (Mia), Justus Sheffield (Sea), Dylan Cease (Tex), Brady Singer (KC), Brad Keller (KC), and Lance McCullers.

Now how many of these teams would make the named pitcher available for a minor league 2B prospect?

You might be able to get McCullers, as he has only one year left on his deal...

I’d get two lesser arms.

Was Enrique Hernandez the Red Sox second choice after Jurickson Profar (who offers similar versatility)?

The 2021 Marcel projections for Hernandez and Profar (who is 18 months younger than Hernandez):

EH 446 PA, .239/.311/.423/.734

JP 525 PA, .242/.323/.425/.749

Steamer and ZiPS project Hernandez with 2021 WAR of 1.0 in 79 games and 0.6 in 141 games while projecting Profar with 2021 WAR of 1.5 in 136 games and 1.6 in 136 games.
