Sad ending to a great career.

Very much so. I really hate to see a player not be able to retire on his own terms.

Life can be hard. We have to be thankful for what blessing we receive. He had many good years and he earned what he was able to accomplish.

Well said.

Globe reporting that Pedroia will announce retirement in the next two weeks.

Very sad! He was an incredible player for many years for us.

Hopefully he recovers enough to live an ordinary life going forward.

I like this trade. Clearly bloom had no use for Chatham and managed to get something beats releasing him,

How exactly do we know "a player to be named" is of equal or greater value to the Sox?

I had Chatham high on my "next to be DFA'd" list, so maybe we get something good from Philly later on.

It's sensible to let the guy go if he has a chance of playing in the majors for another team while he only represents depth for us at best. I had him as a utility infielder, who could fill in at 2nd, short and third. We have others so we let him go.

Chatham, Springs, Mazza, Walden.

There were other options, but he was absolutely a candidate. Getting something in return just made the call easier...

Because the PTBNL freed up a valuable 40 man roster spot, which has value in itself...

Potential cuts:

Brewer

Brice

Mazza

Springs

Walden

Pedroia

Wilson

I ca agree with those names.

And also add in that it is not difficult to see any of them clearing waivers and getting re-signed to an MiLB deal. Except Pedroia, but only because he would not be re-signed...

I could see Walden getting picked up, but I don't think you'd fret about losing him.

If I was able to keep one of those players, it would be Mazza.

I'm not as high on Mazza as many are. While he was one of the best of the minor league pitching staf last eyar, the competition was not exactly daunting. Mazza strikes me as another Walden, a player who made a good first impression he will probably never be able to repeat. I would be far more surprised if he were able to maintain even his moderate success than if he were to just pitch his way off the roster.

I probably have more faith in Springs than Mazza. While Mazza has had the better MLB career, we are talking about 46 innings. Comparatively, Springs was actually better in the minors, which could mean over the long haul, might actually be better in the majors. He's also three years younger.

But no one on that list is irreplaceable, and finding the next one season flash in the pan is not that hard if you bring in enough candidates...

I don't think Mazza is head and shoulders above any of those guys. I thought Springs looked like an MLB reliever at times last year. However, I don't want him closing out games like they had him do in 2020.

You could probably make a case for any of those guys staying instead of the others (except for Pedroia).

And you could make an equally convincing case for getting rid of all of them...

That shows just how crappy the bottom of our 40 man roster is.

I could add 4-6 more names of players I would not fret over losing for nothing in return.

Who?

Besides these 7:

Brewer

Brice

Mazza

Springs

Walden

Pedroia

Wilson

(Not for DFA'ing necessarily, but no loss if we traded them for a PTBNL):

Arauz

Valdez

Payamps

Whitlock (send back as rule 5)

I wouldn't mind trading these guys for prospects:

Brasier (assuming we add 1-2 RP'ers)

Beni (assuming we add 1-2 OF'ers)

Chavis or Arroyo (assuming we add a 2Bman)

Deadline?

Barnes

Eovaldi

JD

When you said "lose for nothing" I didn't realize you meant PTBNL.

If we added 8 players and DFA'd the 7 on your list plus one from mine, I wouldn't be upset.

We may end up sending Whitlock back, despite having tons of roster space.

Valdez could be a flash in the pan. I'm not confident he's anything better than a replacement level player.

Payamps, to be honest, I'm not even sure why we added tis guy.

Arauz is young and looks good on D. He's borderline, but if we sign a 2Bman, one of Chavis, Arroyo or Arauz should go, one way or another.

The only reason the 4 guys on my list aren't on your list is because we'll never need to replace 8-11 players on the 40 man roster.

We may sign 2-4 players and trade for 2-3 players (without giving up a 40 man player) and still never get to my list.

I don't think there's a chance they give up on Whitlock. It's easy enough to stash a Rule V guy, especially now that rosters are larger and they'll need all the arms they can get with a 6 man rotation.
