Not sure what the heck that means, but this needs to be resolved. There is no way he will be coming back for 2021. I hope he isnt being difficult about the need to part ways.

It really doesn't need to be resolved.

The absolute worst thing Pedroia could do is take up a 40 man roster spot. But even this is not an issue as the Sox have some 15-20 players who barely belong in the majors also taking up slots. So even his absolute worst is really not all that damaging, at least not this season. (And as it is the last year of his deal, it won't become an issue next year either.)

If Pedroia wants to keep trying to come back, it's not a big deal. Come opening day, he'll be moved to the 60 day IL, which does NOT require a 40 man roster spot (and would actually open one up for the Sox when he gets moved there).

Is this a possible scenario?

We cut Pedey loose, and he's off the 40 man roster, then during the 2021 season, when someone goes on the 60 day IL, we reinstate Pedey for a one game ceremony where he gets one final AB.

After the game, he returns to retirement.

I don't think this issue is all that concerning.

1. We have no roster crunch- 26 man or 40 man, as of now. (Once we start signing our 6th or 7th FA, then maybe...)

2. I think they've already discussed the fact that Pedey will retire, only the details remain uncertain.

3. If no agreement can be made, we simply DFA Pedey and have a Pedey Day next season.

I don't think Pedey is going away. The long lay-offs had to be killing him, though hopefully work-outs and rehab -- with the hope of a comeback -- kept him going. Now the reality of hanging them up seems unavoidable, but I think we'll see Pedey back in the dugout or on the sidelines soon. Millions of dollars, set for life, but the prototype dirtdog can't leave his milieu and the challenge of competition for long.

He'll be a coach or even a manager -- starting with his sons in Little League, and then maybe high school or college -- but we all know the pros beckon...

Dustin Pedroia is the kind of ballplayer defined by the diamond. I hate to think what will become of his life without baseball in his life.

They can keep Pedroia on the IL through ST if they want to. The 40th man on the roster isn’t the biggest deal in the world.

Especially on this team.

So far, everyone we've DFA'd have went unclaimed. I expect that to happen to Stock and the next few players we DFA, as well.

I don’t see any issue with Pedroia repeatedly trying to come back. As former closer/reliever/Sporting News journalist Todd Jones once wrote “Make them rip the uniform off of you”...

For better or worse, Pedroia has always been this way.
