Seems like more good news on the managerial front.

Roenicke didn't exactly cover himself in glory and Cora no longer needs an experienced bench coach. Good hire.

Let's be fair to Roenicke.

How much glory can any manager cover himself in when he is handed a team where Ryan Weber is the #3 starter? What was he supposed to do? I would call this the equivalent of having pocket 2,7 off suit, but it's actually worse. Because even with that hand, you can still at least bluff your way to a victory...

It's not his fault for the record.

JD was nowhere. Raffy looked lost. Beni was broken. Those are 3 important pieces you can't leave on the side of the road. It's the manager's job to get those guys ready. He didn't.

(Sarcasm alert) Yeah, just like Cora didn't get the 2019 pitching staff ready.

But seriously, Roenicke had everything going against him. It was a virtual tank job by the team.

Out of the 3 you named, the only one I can see that Roenicke might have done better with was Devers.

Devers does appear to be a notoriously slow starter. Once he got going last year, he was actually very good. He did the same thing in 2019, but as the season was longer than 60 games, he had a lot more time to erase his slow start...

True.

He did start out hot his first call-up. He was over a 1.000 OPS at game 23 and went .693 the last 35 games.

In 2018, he was up and down all year:

.740 the first 40 games

.675 in the middle 40 games

.779 the last 41 games

(Want to see how one game can skew the numbers? Game 81, Devers went 5 for 5, so if I shift that one game to the middle group: .743 middle 41 games and .709 the last 40.)

In 2019, Devers was at .690 after 25 games. He hit .897 his next 41 games and 1.115 the next 60 games before finishing with .693 the last 30 games.

2020:

.556 after 20 games

.907 the last 37

This is giving me flashbacks to all the posts about JBJ being streaky.

Many players are streaky. JBJ's issue was that he started most seasons very slowly, so it's not as easily hidden from view.

If someone starts out at 1.000, then hits .500 for a few months, people see .750> .740>.730... When someone starts at .500, we see .510>.520>.540...

Will Venable - viewed as a rising star in the coaching ranks with a bright managerial future - chosen as Alex Cora’s next bench coach

I am on board with this choice.

I agree. Roenicke was in a very difficult situation, but I don't think he did a very good job of relating to and reaching the players. Devers looked absolutely dejected at a couple of points during the season. That would not have happened on Cora's watch.

Cora has a new spring training plan for this year.
