Perhaps 150 innings is optimistic for Eduardo Rodriguez coming off a bed-ridden season of myocarditis.

Maybe? Reports are that he's have no after affects and that he's ready to go.

Hard to say until we get through the year.

Perhaps or maybe or we'll see or not.

I don't know. I don't think things are quite that clear yet. But that's just my opinion.

Look, all I'm saying is that things could really go well for him or things could go poorly for him. Maybe even a little of both. Tough to say.

There is no way of knowing until he gets back into the routine.

There is anecdotal evidence that some people who feel like they have fully recovered and are at 100%, suddenly have a relapse of fatigue or even worse symptoms. There is also some evidenceof longterm nerve or heart damage, but there are also plenty of examples where people have had no longer term affects, so far.

He feels fine. I'm going to try and be optimistic on this one. I hope for the best as our nation just reached a very sad milestone.

We're all hoping for the best.

Franchy being put on the IL already?

What else could he possibly mean on this baseball forum?

The return of Joel Payamps? Pedroia's inevitable early retirement due to injury?

Jonny Miller ran through all of Martinez’s underwhelming stats from last year before asking question.

Martinez: thanks for reminding me, Jonny.

Legend.

These are the same reports saying Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are miraculously gonna be healthier due to yoga. These puff pieces come out every spring training as hope springs eternal. ERod may have no limitations, but that doesn't mean he's back to what he was prior to covid. He was professional athlete endurance and training level and then spent 6 months barely allowed to walk. You don't get back there overnight

True, but he started walking again long before yesterday.

A big league pitcher is essentially an endurance runner when they aren't throwing. Walking and getting back to that level takes time. Like I said, I think ERod is going to have issues going deeper into games in 2021 until he builds up his stamina. I wonder if the sox protect him early and keep him on a short leash (60-80 pitches) for far longer than other pitchers

CC Sabathia was a physical specimen.

Starting ERod at 50-70 pitches and keeping it low for a while makes sense and would still be a vast improvement over everybody we threw out there, last year. We don't need 190 IP from ERod. 140 would be a huge boost.

A little more from Eovaldi (140+).

Something significant from Richards (120+).

Anything from Sale (80+).

More from Pivetta (120+) and Houck (100+).

The same from Perez (140+).

Put all of that together, or even 80% of what I listed, and this rotation is light years better than 2020 and could easily outperform the numbers put up by our 2019 rotation that started out looking pretty good on paper.

2019

GS/IP Starter ERA as SP'er

34/203 ERod 3.81

32/174 Porcello 5.52

25/147 Sale 4.40

22/107 Price 4.28

12/54 Eovaldi 6.13

6/30 Cashner 8.01

7/23 Johnson 5.09

More or less Openers:

8/22 Velazquez 6.95

5/14 Chacin 7.90

3/11 Weber 7.94

2/7 Smith 9.82

3/6 Lakins 0.00

1/6 DHern/Poyner/Taylor 4.50

Chance that Sawamura isn't available on opening day. Maybe swap him with Houck/Brewer?

Word is he has been working out in Japan, but yes, he is iffy.

Any specifics on Cordero's COVID list placement and his likely return date?

Franchy tested positive at intake, so we have no idea when he'll come back. No word about his symptoms.

I must have missed that report.

Thanks.

So, maybe Houck, Brewer, Taylor or Valdez for Sawamura.

Who for Cordero? Wilson is the only true OF'er on the 40 man roster scheduled to start in the minors.

We could activate Duran or Munoz (Gettys/Puello) or just call up Arauz and use Chavis, Marwin or EHern in the OF.

Probably just call up Arauz in the mean time. Maybe not even worry about it until April? They can use 75 players in ST, so they don't have to stick to just the 40 man for workouts and games.

Yes, by April some of these players should be fine, while others may not be.

And at least one complete surprise nobody will put up stellar numbers throughout spring training in an attempt to make an impression, and many fans will claim he needs to be on the team.

Any guesses about who?

I'll nominate Michael Gettys...

I'll say Duran hits .290 and several posters gush.

The more I think about (which is admittedly not much), I would be OK with Duran opening the season in CF. He might flop, but CF is one of their deepest positions throughout the organization. If they wait too long on Duran, at some point Rosario and/or Jimenez could be knocking on the door as well. This could be a good problem to have, but if they start experimenting now it’s not necessarily a bad thing...
