Stanton questionable for opening day following calf injury

In yet another bit of unwelcome injury news for the Yankees, manager Aaron Boone told reporters Wednesday that Giancarlo Stanton sustained a calf injury while working in the outfield yesterday (Twitter link via Joel Sherman of the New York Post). Stanton has already undergone an MRI, which revealed a Grade 1 strain in his ailing right calf. Boone suggested that Stanton will “be down for a bit” and implied that the slugger could miss time early in the season.

Also, the Yankees are toast before the season even starts. :)

Nah, this actually works in their favor: now they can play Tauchman, a much better all-around play-- wait, Beltran's not there this year to tell him what pitch is coming!

This could be a blessing in disguise. I don’t like Stanton in the cold of March in the north. That’s what got him last year. We have Andujar, who outhit him in 2018, and doesn’t have a position. Now he does

so it looks like i was dead wrong on Giancarlo. i wanted the Sox to get him. badly. so glad he will spend the next 7 years on the yankees IL instead of Sox....

this one may end up in the running for "worst baseball contract ever".....

This year he got a calf strain in Florida.

He’ll be back. We will just have to deal with him being a JD Martinez type DH with frequent IL trips. So be it

wait...when did JD become "frequent IL trips"?????

has played in 298 games the last 2 seasons

JD was very injury prone prior to his Boston days. Maybe that points to some optimism for the Yanks when he becomes full time DH?

Ha. You and I are on the same page when it comes to the Yankees and sign stealing.

Unless he opts out after this year

The Yankees can only hope. If I recall correctly, that contract was heavily back loaded, so he hasn't earned much of the contract yet.

He isn't opting out. He is going to be a soft tissue guy as long as he works himself into being a Goliath and not work on flexibility. He is a top notch hitter, and he will continue to be. But with his recent history, he is a DH alone. His contract is strange. It was incredibly back loaded, so for a lux tax perspective, the Yanks do well. For an actual payout perspective, not so much

fair point.

Giancarlo needs to get with TB12 and work on his pliability....

And hoping is all they have. He’s less likely to opt out than Price was..,
