Ben ran the Sox like a small market club. His big market moves were the biggest question. He will now get his chance running a small market squad.

Given the turmoil in Pittsburgh last year, coaches and players fighting in the clubhouse, no one respected the manager which is the reason both he and the GM are now gone, it is easy to see why ownership is high on Ben. For all the criticism, he did help the Sox overcome the debacle of Bob V's time as manager.

Had he just signed Scherzer instead of HRam & Pablo....

(We wouldn't have Price, too.)

I still think it was Larry pulling the strings on those signings. Ben was along for the ride.

If Cherington wants this job, I hope that he gets it. He was a dedicated member of the red sox team. My personal feelings about his specific moves are meaningless. I wish him the best. I hope that he discovers the next Roberto Clemente.

I think Pirates ownership would settle for him to stop players and coaches from throwing punches at each other.

My position on the reasoning goes like this: the year we signed HRam & Pablo, we needed offense and pitching. Scherzer was the only clear ace available that year, so they decided to wait on pitching until the next season, when 3-4 aces were going to be on the open market. I disagreed with signing Pablo. I thought signing HRam to play 3B would have been good. We ended up getting Price, who maybe had better numbers than Scherzer had at the time of their signings.

I try to avoid the whole arguments about who in management pulled the strings.

It's also just about time for 700hitter to make some sort of comment involving coffee beans.

If he gets a GM job, 700 will just have to spill the beans.

time to bust out the old Pirates cap collecting dust in my closet....

I may have to reactivate my Bill Mazeroski fan club membership! I was 9 by the way when he did his thing. A pure thing of beauty.

Cherington has been sought after, for both GM positions and for 2nd in command type positions, since he left the Red Sox.

That Cashman tried to hire him as soon as he left the Sox speaks volumes about his credentials.

Fairly safe bet the Bill Mazeroski Fan Club lacks the ability to renew your membership at this point ;)

Say it ain't so. How about Dick Groat or maybe I settle for Willie Stargell. Or perhaps you are telling me that I am the Bill Mazeroski fan club.

No. I believe Mrs. Mazeroski was also a member at one point.

Maybe you can still join the Dock Ellis Fan Club. They’re always looking for members. Also, they’re always looking for 3-headed garden gnomes carrying vats of custard...

Not to diminish BC creds but the cynic in me thinks Cashman's interest in gathering intelligence on his main competition may have also played a part in the offer.

Re the Pirates the talk on MLB radio is that Pittsburgh may make a decision as early as Wednesday. Their thinking is that Ben's experience in Boston gives him the edge.

Sounds like they must view BC's time in Boston positively.

I'm think Ben will do fine in Pittsburgh. I'm glad he'll be in the NL and wish him the best.

He made some big mistakes here, but I hold no grudges against him. A ring and a great farm and core left for the next guy.

Pittsburgh's clubhouse is a mess. It is as bad as the Boston clubhouse was when BV was running amuck. I think the fact BC did not hire BV but helped clean up the poop left behind is the kind experience ownership is seeking to right the Pirates ship.

Good point.

While I try not to get into the blame game on who in management made which calls, I think it was pretty well known BV was not Ben's guy.

Let's see if he gets it. I don't see how he will do a better job with a small budget than he did with a bloated budget.

But he would fit perfectly with a loser organization. No one would notice him.

Just finished reading The Athletic's reportage on the Pirates. Based on what they report I think "loser organization" is an understatement.
