Game 7 - nats @ astros - 30-oct-2019

Should have left Greinke in. But Houston’s offence needs to do more than 2 runs.

They’ve had their chances. But Scherzer did what great pitchers do when they aren't at the top of their game; he kept the score reasonable.

I'd have taken him out after the HR & before the BB.

Disagree. As well as he was pitching, one homer did not merit removal. Hinch pulled him at the right time; the Kendrick homer was fluky.

I think they were pushing it by asking for 7 innings. The HR was a monster shot.

It was a close call. The next guy might have walked Soto anyways.

It was a crap shoot!

Ya fair enough. Regardless Houston’s offence isn’t doing their part. They must have had like 15 men on base and just 2 runs. Won’t win that way.

4-2 Nats wow.

I’m off to bed folks. Sick and tired. Hope the Nats hang on!!

Given how the relievers have s*** the bed, maybe Hinch should have left Greinke in.

So who is the MVP if this score holds? I'd say Rendon or Strasburg.. but maybe Kendrick if they have short term memory?

I would say Rendon or Stras for sure.

Also they should have walked Rendon. That is a gut punch there.

Wow, 1924 was the last MLB team to win it all from Washington.

What team is has gone the longest, now?

From a team (franchise) standpoint, it was the Guardians before this series and still is. Cleveland now gets the longest city drought as well (1948).

Not a Nats fan, but being from DMV area, a lot of my friends are, and I was rooting for Nats hard. What an awesome moment. Soto, Strasburg and Kendrick will be remembered in DC Sports History for a very long time.

Cole should have gotten into this game, before it got out of hand.

What were they saving him for?

Alternatively, maybe stick with Grienke a little longer -- he was pitching well. True, he gave up the HR that inning, but that can happen even when an SP is pitching well.

Hinch will be questioned forever on this one. Greinke has one of the best game 7 performances of all time. You’ve got a lead. You’ve got the best pitcher in baseball in your pen. I know Harris has been awesome this year, but he’s not Cole.

But it's not exactly standard procedure for a starter to pitch on 2 days rest either. Bumgarner did it quite nicely in 2014, of course.

Exactly.

This isn’t a case of a pitcher not being used in his normal role, like Zach Britton. If Cole came in and got lit up, then there would be legitimate questions, like “Why use the tired SP and ignore our bullpen?”

Ask the Dodgers how it worked out with Kershaw...

Also, it was the middle of the inning. it all fell apart pretty quick on greinke. cole takes longer to heat up then a normal reliever. he was getting loose to come in the following "clean" inning. this is a non issue for hinch. now leaving in greinke vs bringing in harris is certainly up for debate...

Great post by OT in another thread that i thought should go here:

Don't know where to put this but in watching the WS last night, the importance of getting ball and strike calls correct was brought home to me again.

MLB had put the umpire behind the plate that had graded best on getting ball and strike calls correct and yet humans blink and can otherwise get things wrong at times. One such time occured in the 7th inning. Greinke had given up a homer to Rendon and had the dangerous Soto at bat. The count was 1 and 1. Greinke threw a sinking pitch to Soto that was well within the strike zone and should be made the count 1 and 2, a pitchers count. Greinke grimaced at the call of ball and then tried to nibble and lost Soto. He was removed from the game and the rest is history.

It wasn't the only bum call as Correra was called out on strikes on a pitch that was several inches inside.

I know there will be boo-hiss comments from those who would not favor robo-umps but you could make a case that the WS outcome was altered by a bad call when the technology was there to avoid the issue. I don't know if it will be brought up in the news but maybe it should be.

One could also debate bringing in Harris vs Osuna or having Cole warmed up near the start of the 7th.
