Really the title of this thread should be: Mookie Betts - trade or don't trade. There appears to be no option of extending. Unless we use another alternate title: Brock Holt - trade or extend

They won a title in 13 mostly by sheer luck as the same roster faded into two last place finishes. You can’t hope for sheer luck. You need to rebuild with actual future talent. No Allan Craig and Joe Kelly.

It is possible to contend while building. 2013 is Exhibit A, and it was not mostly by sheer luck.

Luck ? Your an idiot .

As far as trading him this offseason goes, there might be a pretty limited number of teams interested.

Anyone who trades for him gets a great player, but also a very expensive one (probably around 28 million), and they get him for one year only, with every indication that he's not interested in an extension.

The Yankees won the title in 2009 by sheer spending. I'd rather root for a lucky team...

Trevor Bauer brought back a nice haul for the Guardians with the same promise of testing free agency

That was a weird move by Cincy. If you can find somebody stupid like that it certainly helps.

I think Betts made himself quite clear on the situation when ask if he was against signing an extension he replied NO but he also said that he would be lying if he would be ready sign an extension. I've already have my set value in mind and that's not negotiable if my demand are met I would sign a deal. Betts also like playing in Boston, like his teammates, like the staff and front office but he also said he understands that this is a business and he doesn't plan to sell himself short. He also asked last night with DD gone if that would make a difference in signing a deal his answer was doesn't matter who's in the front office it doesn't change anything on my views regarding my contract negotiations.

Now with Scott Boras as his agent the king of extortion you can be assured that he'll have his homework done and the best deal forward for Mookie Betts he wiil be contacting many GM across the MLB.

Boras isn't Mookie's agent, thankfully.

Um. Don't want to burst your bubble... But take a look at who won last year and how much they spent. Sorry to take you down a notch

We did win a few without being the top spender. How far back do the Yanks have to go to make that claim?

Posted

The Yanks outspent the Sox every year from 1998-2017. The Sox have been the top spenders the last two years, only.

The Dodgers were first and Yanks second for the 4 previous seasons (2014-2017).

The Yanks were the top spenders for 15 straight seasons up to 2013.

Let's not kid ourselves...

% Yanks outspent the Sox :

1998: 10.4 (Yanks ring)

1999: 22.9 (Yanks ring)

2000: 18.7 (Yanks ring)

2001:

2002: 16.7

2003: 53.5

2004: 45.7 (Sox ring)

2005: 69.4

2006: 61.8

2007: 32.6 (Sox ring)

2008: 57.2

2009: 64.8 (Yanks ring)

2010: 27.1

2011: 19.9

2012: 14.2

2013: 52.0 (Sox ring)

2014: 44.8

2015: 17.1

2016: 17.0

2017: 1.0

Sox outspent Yanks by this %

2018: 39.6 (Sox ring)

2019: 58.0

You know you're being trolled by a pro here, right?

I eat trolls for lunch. I have to add a lot of salt and pepper.

I find trolls to be distasteful, myself. Especially those in pinstripes.

I never said the Yanks don't spend. I just rebutted the thought that the Yanks bought their 2009 title without accepting the fact that the sox did the same thing last year

Nobody is unaccepting of the idea that spending big led to the 2018 ring.

I'm waiting for you to name the last time the Yanks won without being the top spender.

We have 3 since 2004, although we spent big all those years.

We can get something for JD, especially if we pay a bigger chunk of his salary than needed.

Betts should bring back a nice haul.

If we deal one or both, we might as well look to trade anybody and everybody not in our long term plans (waiting on some who's stock is low right now- like Eovaldi & Price).

If the plan is to get back to spending big within a few short years, maybe we can get back to near the top faster than some seem to think it might take.

I agree with you on this. Also, if this is leaked now, the likelihood is this was leaked from someone in the FO. This isn't a speculation piece

Actually Cincy just gave up a single prospect. San Diego then piled on...

Still... for Eovaldi?

I hope Dombrowski is brought back as the new GM just so Henry can fire him again...

Oakland has spent less money that we have in underperforming contracts, yet they are going to the playoffs and wee aren't. Spending big is only one of the criteria, the other is spending wisely.

I'm not for trading Eovaldi, this winter. Put it that way. Hopefully, he and Price come back looking healthy and strong, and maybe then we trade them for a better return. If they suck and their stock falls further, we lose little.

Very true, but we needed to spend large to get Price, Kimbrel, JD and others. We knew their contracts would look worse or bad near their ends, but it was the "price to pay" for the ring.

Most bigger ticket FA signings end up badly or are total busts. We've swung and missed a few times (CC, HRam & Pablito), but many of our biggest signings led to a ring(s).

That was taken from an analytical piece by Alex Speier. I don't think it was a leak.
