Basically same guys noted on the most recent SoxProspects podcast.

I don’t see a reason to worry about Ockimey getting selected tho.

With so many roster slots, why risk it?

I'd rather cut anyone of 3-5 players (or trade JBJ).

If the Sox protect 6 players, they cannot make a selection. They might leave spot open if there is a player Bloom likes.

No one wanted Ockimey last year. He did improve a bit this year by taking a lot more walks and showed more power (aided by the Manfred Missile), but I am not so sure how many team want him on the MLB roster all season. Although they could select him and work something out...

They can DFA (Kelley, Reyes, Brewer, Shawaryn, Weber) or non tender (JBJ, Leon or Hembree) or trade someone.

I expect a few DFas for sure.

I’d protect Ockimey over Weber...

Not sure a platoon AAA 1b guy gets taken. Not a typical rule 5 pick.

Weber is prob gone.

I'd DFA Kelley over Weber. I don't know what they saw in Reyes, last year, but DFA'ing him would not make me blink.

A 9.38 K/BB ratio, I suspect...

In single A ball. It fell to 3.13 in AA last year.

But they added him to the 40 man roster after A ball.

You said you didn’t understand why they added. I suspect that 9.38 K/BB ratio played a big part...

I get that, but 9.38 in A Ball is not something I'd consider all that impressive.

I'm sure they liked what they saw, but I'm thinking he's expendable, now.

I'm wondering if Bloom may select multiple rule 5 players, this year.

In his entire time with the Rays, Bloom selected one player in the Rule 5 draft.

I’m more interested in him making deals for the players other teams want to protect but can’t. Like how Dombrowski did last year for Colten Brewer...

Good points, but I'm not sure he's ever had a farm so barren that some rule 5 players from other teams are better than players on the bottom of our roster.

Unlikely IMO. Maybe he grabs a reliever or toolsy OF, but not both.

Well the problem is that they have to be better than the bottom of the 25 man roster, which really isn’t likely. Unless Bloom uses the Rule 5 draft as a precursor to making a trade or two..,

Sox announce additions to 40 man roster (avoid rule 5):

First, Sox added Dalbec who is ranked No. 2 among Red Sox prospects by MLB Pipeline. The Sox also added No. 9 prospect C.J. Chatham (infielder), No. 18 prospect Marcus Wilson (outfielder), No. 28 prospect Kyle Hart (lefty starter) and No. 30 prospect Yoan Aybar (lefty reliever) to the 40-man roster.

No Ockimey.

Boston’s roster is now at 39, and is as follows:

CATCHERS (2): Sandy León, Christian Vázquez

INFIELDERS (9): Xander Bogaerts, C.J. Chatham, Michael Chavis, Bobby Dalbec, Rafael Devers, Marco Hernández, Tzu-Wei Lin, Dustin Pedroia, Sam Travis

OUTFIELDERS (5): Andrew Benintendi, Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., J.D. Martinez, Marcus Wilson

As the 39 man roster stands right now, who would make the 26 man roster, next season, assuming no trades, signings or DFA's?

My view:

IL or 60 Day DL: Pedroia

SP: Sale, Rodriguez, Price, Eovaldi, Johnson

RP: Workman, Barnes, D Hernandez, Walden, Taylor, Osich, Hembree

C: Vazquez, Leon

1B: Chavis (2B), Dalbec (3B)

2B: Hernandez, Lin (SS/OF)

3B: Devers

SS: Bogaerts

LF: Benintendi, Travis (1B)

CF: Bradley

RF: Betts

DH: Martinez

40 Man:

SP: Velazquez, Shawaryn, Weber, Reyes, K Hart

RP: Brasier, Brewer, Poyner, Lakins, Kelley, Aybar

2B/SS: Chatham

3B: Dalbec

OF: Wilson

No options remaining:

Vaz, Workman, Hembree, Johnson, Travis, Lin, Eovaldi, Leon, Weber & Osich

(Strange list. Some of these guys will have to go, even if JBJ is traded.)
