Sure, why not....set another guy up to fail. Is there ANY evidence that Nate can be a reliable closer of the course of a regular season or even half of it or is this another example of small sample size (see Brasier) and something they have not tried in 2019 yet?

No but there is lots of evidence that pitching large amounts of innings is damaging to his arm.

This is probably more about Eovaldi than the Sox bullpen...

Great....if we are going to start to "protect" guys this season and shove them into critical roles just because they are perceived as fragile just throw in the towel and sell. Any pitcher can break down at ANY time. Comes with the territory. Can't predict it and trying to manage it is sheer insanity.

That’s an expensive closer

For his experience in the role, yes. But he’s paid in line with Davis, Chapman, Jansen...

whomever he gets closer to i hope they are OK with him being in their personal space.

#metoo is real.

Maybe he gets closer to Joe Biden?

I think with Eovaldi, you can predict it....

All the evidence and even the PR out of the Sox organization suggests they have spent what they are going to spend. It would seem they could get SOMEBODY that could actually.... that has actually closed before without giving up too much. Pushing Eovaldi there is silly.

Get a somewhat over the hill Closer and toss him back there. Would be better than anything they have tried so far or that they are gonna' try from within this current roster.

Normally I agree.

But like I said, I think this is more about Eovaldi than the Sox bullpen. Maybe full time starter duty this year is just too much for Eovaldi’s frequently rebuilt arm. Maybe it’s a choice of limited action or no action.

This might not be the cautionary reaction I think you’re implying. It might be based on the condition of his arm post-surgery...

Doesn't matter. The point is still the same.

How does that correlate with filling the most critical role and the most glaring deficiency in the pen with Nate?

Answer: IT DOESN"T.

Put him in the pen if you want to. That does not actually make him a Closer. If anything this would represent the same thing that has failed to date....Closer by committee.

To say nothing of the question of when is Nate coming back? When can we expect this next EXPERIMENT to take shape assuming there is some truth to the rumor?

each night the "closer" should be whichever starter is due for his BP session.....

But we don’t even know who the fifth starter is...

That's probably the best idea I've heard. And on the 5th day we can run out there whomever we would be running out on the other days and hope for the best.

That's a better idea than what we're doing.

I think that's one of those ideas that's great in theory but problematic in practice. Otherwise teams would be doing it already.

Let's have an unreliable guy closing games. Great thinking.

You don't know if Eovaldi will pitch his next game outing to outing.

Is it any worse that trotting Barnes out there?

In fact other teams stopped doing it a long time ago...

in crunch, a closer needs to be able to pitch 3 out of 4 days. I don't see Eovaldi doing that. If Barnes has "issues" pitching back to back games, what will become of Eovaldi?

Seems like a bit of a desperation move. When is Nate due back anyway?

It makes sense given how desperate we are to have a closer. Curious who will fit in the 5th role. God knows these "bullpen" days have not been good. Though.... was it Johnson who went 5 innings a week or two ago and was pretty solid? He probably could have gone 6 actually. Regardless we need a starter and at least another 2 relievers.

Eovaldi deserves the chance. I’m sure he will do well only thing is he might be rusty.

I think maybe a starter.

I originally assumed a “starter turned swingman” who could go to the bullpen when Eovaldi returned. Then I assumed it would be Shane Greene

Now I’m thinking a starter - with Mets’ PR blunder Jason Vargas climbing to the top of the list of affordable candidates...

Any chance Wright is moved to the starting rotation?

While I prefer that idea, can he physically handle it? Even knuckle ballers have to have some stamina in their arm and shoulder...
