I’m not sure a majority of the people watching knew the rule. I see numerous writers saying he should’ve been out, Twins broadcast thought he was going to be out, etc. apparently you need full foot out of the box. Like I said, I doubt it matters anyway, Brian johnson was intent on losing.

Actually, no he wasn't. You can see it clearly in the slo-mo that NESN just ran as they swallowed their anger and realized Rosario WAS NOT out of the box.

He definitely had part of his foot outside the box, which is why Twins announcer thought he might be ruled out.

Agreed...but that is not the rule.

Good thing its not the rule. You should see how many batters are "partially" out of the box every swing they take.

Yeah like I said, I’m not mad at that not being called. It was just odd that so many people, announcers, writers, etc didn’t know the rule. It didn’t cost the Sox the game.

To be fair, at the professional level it doesn’t come up all that often. In the 50+ years I’ve been following the game, the number of times I’ve even seen it come up could probably be counted on one hand. I knew the rule because I used to umpire at the amateur level , where it does happen a few times a year.

The bullpen was called on to throw 12 innings last night and did a respectable job. They didn’t go 1 for 13 with RISP or call for stupid sac bunts to get Mookie walked. Despite Johnson sucking, this loss was NOT on the bullpen. The Twins tied it up against Workman, who was having one of the best seasons for a reliever in MLB history, and tied it up again while the bullpen was pitching in their EIGHTH INNING!

The hitting was a flop. End of story...

when's football season start. I can't wait for BB's press conferences. "We did what's best for the team." I can subscribe to that!

Yeah, like his explanation for sitting Malcolm Butler in the Super Bowl: 'Coach's decision.'

WTF Cora pulling Price after 5 / 73 pitches after a game he only pitched 1+ inning.

fantastic job by our bullpen.

Yes that was soooooo enlightening. Before he said that, I thought Butler was benched due to an online fan vote...

It means Price is very fragile or Cora's an idiot. Either answer would be acceptable.

Price was a horse at the end for us last year. Maybe Cora knows what he's doing.

You game thread guys heap so much abuse on the team it's hilarious. I know that's part of the deal of being a game threader, though. We all have our jobs here LOL

Considering in his last start, Price got hammered like a sorority girl on Jell-O shot night, maybe the quick hook was health related or a preventive measure...

come on bell. he was coming off a game where he only threw 49 pitches. and now we are pulling him at 73 pitches in a tie game vs one of the best hitting teams in the league? thats a freaking terrible job by the manager.

Slash, best case scenario was Price going 7, don't you think? And the pen gave up no runs in the 6th or 7th.

if by "preventive measure" you mean preventing a W for our team then yes. agreed.

but to pull him at 73 pitches in a game where he only has given up 1 run so far because he had nothing 5 days prior is just asinine.

But that also buys the Sox two more innings before having to go to Brian Johnson...

agreed...7 innings is what he probably would have went. push those 0 runs from the relievers out another 2 innings.

even if we dont do that....why are we defending pulling our $31MM starter after 73 pitches vs a top tier opponent when he has only given up 1 run???

Maybe but Cora can talk to Price and see how he feels, unlike us.

It might have been foolishness, but at least acknowledge Cora is making this call with infinitely more information than us.

And the problem wasn’t the pitching after Price. It was the abysmal performance by the Sox hitters, especially with RISP...

Yeah, he should have seen that using Johnson in the 17th was going to be a problem LOL

Hard for me to second guess pulling Price after 5 and 73 pitches because I don't have the same info Cora and his pitching coach have. What I do know is that his changeup, even low in the zone, was getting hit hard by a bunch of righty bats, which is not supposed to happen.

Besides, as notin says, the problem last night wasn't the pitching but the hitting--1 for 13 with RISP. The one batter, JDM, who rested between at bats during that 5:45 hour marathon went 0 for 8 with 5 K's. The other 8 guys played 17 hits and made at least two superb defensive plays--that incredible grab by JBJ in the 7th, and the pickoff (at 3b) by Vazquez in the 6th.

Because Price has had various health issues over the last few years and it's better having him than having him on the IL.

Definitely. I did.

It’s not a matter of what he could foresee. If there is nothing wrong with Price, why take him out and use the bullpen for more IP than necessary?

And that it would have played out that Johnson wouldn’t pitch in the 17th inning looks like it would have been a good thing. Agreed?

I think you answered your own questions in post #769.

Disappointing to wake up to this score. Nobody to blame other than the offense and I didn’t watch past the 10th inning. If Porcello and the pen didn’t pitch lights out in game one we would have lost that too. Offense needs to wake up and quit leaving players stranded on base. Leave so many runs off the board. Disappointing

so he is a 70 pitch limit pitcher now? goody.

Last year, he didn't have so many bags of garbage in the bullpen. Playing for the long run and October is misguided when you are in 3 place treading .500.

That being said, the hitting and the offense needs to start getting more consistent and find ways t get runs in. Last year, they could bludgeon teams with Home Runs, single and double them to death or force defenses into mistakes with their base running -- steals and hit and run. They are not putting pressure on defenses.

Was a good decision by Cora in my opinion. The bullpen has been pitching very good the last couple weeks and they pitched very good again last night. At the time we could sigh and say what a stupid decision. But it was actually very smart by Cora because the bullpen came in and got the job done..... The offense on the other hand s*** the bed completely and cost us the game by stranding players constantly and leaving the bases loaded and doing squat.

Agreed with the hitting.... Need to start taking advantage of guys being on base and bringing in more runs..

As for the bullpen, you have to take advantage of them when you can and as of late they have been red hot.

Shawaryn, Braisier, Workman, Barnes, Taylor, Brewer, Velazquez & johnson gave up a total of 3 runs in a total of what.... 12 innings? That is pretty damn amazing for any bullpen.

so we are paying $31MM for a 70 pitch limit pitcher? you are OK with this? you have more faith in Shawaryn pitching the 6th then David Price with 73 pitches??
