Sixth-round #MLBDraft Pick for the Red Sox is Chris Murphy, a junior LHP from @USDbaseball. The 6-1, 175 southpaw struck out 87 and only allowed 44 hits in 64.1 innings, though he walked 43.

I think we're at the part of the draft where senior signs are flying off the board for bonus saving purposes

2nd Day Draft

4. Red Sox remain opportunistic

Speaking of American League East teams drafting potential values, the Red Sox entered the draft with modest expectations. After all, Boston had just two picks in the top 100, and none in the top 40.Yet the Red Sox exited day two having selected five of MLB.com's top-150 draftees.

@B_Sakowski_PG

Red Sox making the move here for Noah Song, drafting aggressively. First round talent with FB into upper-90's and plus breaking ball, military commitment coming from the Naval Academy kinda clouded the sign-ability. Still, big upside play for the Red Sox here

Those five are Cameron Cannon, Matthew Lugo, Ryan Zeferjahn, Noah Song, and Jaxx Groshans. Four of those five players -- Lugo (38), Song (68), Cannon (79), and Zeferjahn (84) -- were ranked in the top 100. Pre-draft rankings mean only so much and blah blah blah, but that's a healthy 2:1 ratio in terms of top 100 prospects versus top 100 picks.

The Red Sox will take it.

Lugo probably will crack the Top 10 - Song could crack the Top 15 but it is all about whether he has to serve his navy commitment or not.

Song will be serving his naval commitment. That’s he only reason he lasted to the 4th round.

As an aside, I do wish the military academies would allow prime athletes drafted into professional sports to pursue their athletic dreams while placing them in reserve status until their careers are over. It isn’t like Song got drafted into a CPA firm or even medical school where he could practice into his 60s. He’s entering a career path that usually flames out before the age of 30.

Well, he also had some sort of Major and career path at the Academy besides baseball...

I hate that they keep including Jay Groome on these lists. The guy hasn’t thrown a pitch in 2 years and won’t for several more months. Right now, his high ranking seems to be largely based on his performance in high school 3 years ago. To me, it’s very discouraging that only 4 players in the Sox entire farm are deemed more impressive than one who isn’t even playing...

If he was going for sure - he would enter the bigs as a 24 year old for the 2022 season. 4th round is way too high to pick him at that point aside from being a senior sign to save pool money. Taking him in the 4th means the Red Sox think there is a chance for an exemption. The longtime policy is that Sox'll have to wait 2 years - but there had been some political movement in recent years to try to allow postponement of service. Who knows.

Well, these lists are based primarily on promise not stats, but your point is well taken. (What about Lugo & Song cracking the top 20 withour ever even putting on a professional baseball uniform?)

My top list might look like this...

It's still about upside - and the relative non-issues with TJS. The upside of a guy with some legitimate #2/#3 starter profile is always going to be up there a bit. Really, Duran's leap is the great story of the farm system. It shows that things change - all the time.

Dalbec is getting on base - but he strikes out so much against AA pitching.

Son of Jay Bell taken in 7th. http://news.soxprospects.com/2019/06/red-sox-select-brock-bell-with-seventh.html Throws hard. Just transitioned to P full time after having TJS.

Will Danton taken in the 8th. http://news.soxprospects.com/2019/06/red-sox-select-wil-dalton-with-their.html Had a great Sophmore season and absolutely feasted on SEC pitching, but fell last year. He changed is batting stance and it didn't work. Maybe Sox can fix him.

Cody Scroggins selected in the 9th. http://news.soxprospects.com/2019/06/red-sox-select-cody-scroggins-with.html Often injured and had elbow soreness in April. Has already had TJS.

Stephen Scott selected in the 10th. http://news.soxprospects.com/2019/06/red-sox-select-stephen-scott-with-their.html Can play almost every position on the field (1b, 2b, OF, C). Finished college career with two straight seasons with OPS above 1.000 at Vandy.

@IanCundall

Through ten rounds, the #RedSox have taken nine junior college/college players and one high school player. They’ve taken five hitters & five pitchers (four RHP and one LHP). This somewhat mirrors what they did last year when they took two HS players followed by eight college guys

Like last year, the Red Sox didn’t draft a HS pitcher in the first 10 rounds. Prior to these two drafts, they had taken at least one HS arm in the first 10 rounds every year since 2004. Last year they took their first in the 29th rd; interested to see when/if it happens tomorrow.

The best HS player in Massachusetts, Sebastian Keane from North Andover, went undrafted in rounds 1-10 and is one of the top prep players available. He's going to have some big offers tonight to break his Northeastern commitment as round 11 is where these types go.

Keith Law's writeup on AL draft classes http://insider.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/26905439/keith-law-2019-mlb-draft-recap-al-team-team-breakdown

Boston was the only team without a first-round pick this year, with its top pick bumped down 10 spots to No. 43 because the team exceeded the luxury-tax threshold. The Red Sox started their draft with Cam Cannon (2), a shortstop from the University of Arizona who has to move to another position, likely second base, but has great bat-to-ball skill and at least good doubles power. They went for more upside with their normal second-round pick, Puerto Rican shortstop Matthew Lugo (2), who just turned 18 a few weeks ago. I think the consensus is that he's likely to move to third base in the long run, but he's here for his swing, which he repeats well and produces hard line-drive contact that I think will turn into above-average power when his body fills out.

Kansas right-hander Ryan Zeferjahn (3) has a starter repertoire but below-average command and just had a down year for the Jayhawks, up to 95 with a short slider and circle-change, nothing very consistent, and walked too many hitters this year with a near-4 ERA.

Right-hander Noah Song (4) is the best prospect to come out of the Naval Academy in quite some time, up to 96 with good spin on two different breaking balls. His delivery has some red flags, with a high elbow and late pronation, but the bigger concern is when he might be allowed to pitch since he has a two-year commitment to serve in the Navy after graduating.

Jaxx Groshans (5) is the older brother of Blue Jays prospect Jordan Groshans, who was a first-rounder last year. A catcher for the University of Kansas, he's fringy behind the plate and did most of his damage out of the conference this year, hitting just .272/.434/.432 in Big 12 play. He seems like a potential backup. Lefty Chris Murphy (6) was a senior at the University of San Diego but has good enough stuff to be a prospect, up to 95 with an above-average curveball. He just hasn't had the kind of results he should have with that stuff.

That’s actually not all that impressive. I know the Sox had lower top picks, but the only time they came up with at least an even share was in the Fangraphs Top 200...

1. There is a lot of variability in the lists - ESPN and Fangraphs, BA and MLB have full time people on the job, so the lists all have credibility. The methods differ too, so you get some diversity. (fangraphs and ESPN scout the prospects themselves)

2. Ultimately signability matters in a lot of these choices. Remember, the Sox HAVE to sign their Top 10 picks to claim all of the pool money. I think from the picks it's pretty clear they are going to try to find some bonus money for Keane who they took in Round 11. Faltine in Round 39 I am assuming will honor his Texas commit (he doesn't last to Round 39 if he showed any inclination of signing). You have to assume that the college seniors the Sox took in Rounds 6-10 are there more or less because they will allow them to save pool money for Keane. (Dalton and Scott are probably org guys who will take the $10K bonus happily)

They weren't expected to gather an "even share," but they seemingly did pretty good with what they had.Better than their slot indicated, for sure, by almost any measure (assuming these rankings have any merit).

Does that free up enough money to sign another guy not expected to be signed?

Not sure, it looks like they used more money in other picks and didn't have enough to sign this kid

Who have we signed, and who is the best guy still unsigned?

All the draft grades I have seen have panned both team's drafts and I agree with them. I think the Yankees draft might bear fruit in some of the later relief pitcher arms, just because that is what we do. But I don't like the Volpe pick. The Sikkema pick was confusing based on what we do best (develop power rather than finesse). 2-10 wasn't bad, but when you have two picks between 30 and 38, you have to come away with a big tool player and we didn't get one. The sox didn't have a pick til 43. Cannon seems like a reach type pick. Lugo seems like a total package player, but he is more of the Volpe type with intangibles over bat. Song is the best pick the sox made. The rest is meh. I think the Yanks had an opportunity and whiffed. I think the sox didn't really make any surprise additions and didn't help their farm out of the gate. Could guys develop and surprise, of course, but this seems like a wasted year for both teams
