This loss will be on Cora, pure and simple. Horrible decision to leave ERod out there. Or even to send him out to pitch the 7th.

This points out the problem with the waste matter out in the pen. Can't bring Workman or Hembree as they are totally unreliable unless you hand them a clean inning. Forced to Barnes who is gassed.

Barnes pitches are all over the lot. Very little evidence of command/control. I guess it keeps the batters off balance. Good for Matt. This is a good example of your "closer" used in a high leverage situation , in mid game.

I expect numerous comments tomorrow about how that decision could have only come from Harold Nerdwell in the analytics department. Cora had nothing to do with it...

Love him or hate him, Barnes is the best thing in this BP. Not a BP to give one much hope of reaching the PO's.

That was a heck of a 3-1 curve when Barnes was having difficulty throwing the pitch. Credit Vaz with pulling Barnes butt out of the fire calling for two straight curves and Bud Black for sending the runner.

Perhaps, but it is stupid to manage as though your only choices are to keep a tired starter in or to bring in a guy who pitched two innings last night.

This is on Cora.

I am disgusted by this game. These games they should finish. This team came into this series with a lot of momentum and that could all be gone in just two games.

The logical leap from "K's are over-rated" to "K's are irrelevant" is a tad breath-taking.

I agree, but it magnifies how little trust Cora has in his BP.

Not all K's are irrelevant. It depends on the situation. When a pitcher strikes out the side with no one on base, are any of those K's relevant?

Well it is all a matter of odds. There is no perfect decision unless we engage in Monday Morning Quarterbacking. Cora did this a good deal last year to protect his pen as well. He did not give up the lead. He did come with the most reliable high leverage arm he had out there. How often have we seen this team win games with their bats against the opponent's pen late in games. I did not like seeing Cora stay with Erod for the 7th but I understand it.

I have no issues with what he did past ERod as its exactly what he did last year under very similar circumstances.

Correct, it's on Cora and despite 7 guys in the pen, two of who are consistently unreliable, he uses his #1 choice who pitched 2 innings last night. I'll give Alex the latitude that EROD could start the inning and try to get the first guy out. When that failed EROD had to come out then. There's the fail. Now with Barnes and Walden used up, how do you finish this potential extra inning game ?

Call Kimbrel tonight Dombrowski.

DD: "K, I need you here in Boston ASAP."

Kimbrel: "No problem, I'll be there tomorrow. BTW, I want half a million after each save."

DD: "What happens if you don't get the save?"

Kimbrel: "Then I'll only want $100,000.00."

Benintendi has 2 hits tonight, but with a chance to break the tie, he whiffs yet again to a LOOGY. Truly have little use for the short armed dude.
