What are the chances of Porcello being offered a contract extension?

I could see us trading Betts, if he turns down a big extension offer, but I hope we go hard after him as a FA after 2020 and the reset.

I'd rather see us trade JD, who is less likely part of our plans beyond 2020 (opt out is more likely). I know we won't get nearly as much as we would for Betts, and if we end up losing Betts anyway, then we're down 2 big bats and one big glove. However, it's not like we won't use the money from JD and Betts to get several other good players.

It's a tough call.

I can't see trading Sale, Price or Eovaldi, unless their stock rises with a healthy start to the 2020 season.

The Pedey retirement idea is just a dream- a very unlikely one.

We're not trading Bogey.

Beni might bring back a nice haul, but with JBJ likely gone and no OF prospects in sight, I can't see that happening. (I wouldn't be against trading Beni, if the return haul was good enough, and we saved some money to spend elsewhere.)

I'm a fan of the name on the front of the jersey, not the back. I can live with whomever the SOX get rid of.

100%

JBJ is my favorite Sox player, but I think he should be traded.

There must have been some players you didn't feel that way about. Yaz maybe?

....... I don’t think he’s coming back......

:( :( :( :(

Kind of like the end of Toy Story 3 when Andy goes off to College and Woody says “so long partner”

Not a popular position .I would bring Porkchop back for 2 years 20 million if he balks even a moment I move on .

Call me stupid from the off season. Who’s porkchop? I’m brain dead lately lol.

I think the title of the thread might give it away.

Oh.... Porcello, just never heard anyone call him that before. He's so skinny.

Maybe it's the big fat porkchop fastballs he threw that led to HRs.

What changed between September 29 and today?

What, like his last 17 IP (3 GS)?

How about his last 5 starts?

2-3 6.12

BTW, I was one of Porcello's biggest supporters from way back. I loved the extension and still defended him after his first year with Boston, but 2018 was nothing better than a complete disaster.

Yes, 32 starts are wonderful, but when you let up 5 or more runs 12 times, I'm sorry if I can't defend the season based on his last 3 starts.

he gives us innings and is on the bump every 5th day. he would be a great 5th starter to have. I forget what my 2 year offer was from pages ago in this thread Harmony can probably sort me if im way off but i would be fine with a 2 year / $16MM contract for Porky.

Eh. One year.

We’ve also seen him give a Cy Young caliber performance, but that’s not who he is either.

We have a good idea who Rick Porcello is by now...

Well, he has been a bit on the erratic side, other than the innings pitched.

I suspect the Manfred Missile hurt him in 2019.

I wish we could have him back but I don't think we can fit him into the 2020 payroll pie.

Starting pitching.

As much as Bloom and Tampa have redefined pitching staffs (initially for small market clubs), at least Washington just reminded everyone of the value of starters. On a tangent to Moon's idea -- with a nod to Notin -- the Red Sox standard-bearer is the '04 rotation, with five guys staying healthy to make at least 29 starts each; it was 15 years ago, but I bet everyone on talksox can name them all without going on baseball-reference...

Boston only had two pitchers start at least 30 games last year, which explains part of the problem -- but staff durability was never a Sox trademark even when winning three divisions in a row. The best was '17, when three made at least 30 starts; '16 and the great '18 team only had two apiece. BTW, Porcello has made at least 27 starts in every year of his career, over 11 straight seasons.

Obviously, it's unreasonable to expect any modern rotation to get lucky enough to start 97% of its team's games like the '04 champs. But the '19 Nats had four guys make at least 27 starts. An overworked Sox bullpen broke down last year (even though there are still guys I never want to see in the 9th again, even on full rest). But it all comes back to starters. We all know that acquiring veterans is costly and too risky. It's time to develop some, and I really think this will be Bloom's forte. Expect to see some openers early, but hopefully only as placeholders.....

Unless we do some wheeling and dealing, we may not even be able to afford a $10M/2 offer.

My guess is, he may be looking for a 1 year deal to reset his value- maybe with incentives, or a longer deal with an opt out, in case he does very well in 2020.

I would not offer $16M/2.

Agree with this. Porcello still hasn’t said what he would or wouldn’t take. Having a pitcher who is never injured for a cheap price is hard to find now days. Maybe if they let

Him keep his 2 seam fast ball his ERA will be better too. Was strange how he did away with it for most of last year.

we wont be able to do anything with SP unless there is wheeling /dealing. that is, if the JH reset mandate is firm.

my assumption is JBj is non tendered. we would also need to relieve ourselves of JD and/or betts to be able to afford SP and stay under to reset. i am not prepared to pay 50% of Price or Eovaldi salary to pitch for another team just so we can sign Porky.

there is only a small window for my $16/2 offer - no reset or the JD/Mook trade.

8 mill a season seems reasonable and if he wants to stay here like he says he does I don’t se why he wouldn’t take.

agreed.

Harmony i will save you the time:

the past 2 seasons fangraphs has porky's value as:

2018: 19.3MM

2019: 14.3MM

a 2 year / $16MM contract would be a steal for the Sox. Porky and his agent will expect to receive a better offer from another club.

Yeah 2 for 16 would be a sweet deal.

A lot of times it seems like when a player says "I want to stay with this team: he means "I want to stay with this team if they can meet my price." Porcello might be willing to take whatever the Sox offer, but he does have an agent who will tell him what he is worth and what he would be leaving on the table. And no one hires an agent so that they can take a hometown discount...

Pedroia and Bogaerts didn't have agents?
