Would the Sox coaching and training staff start Sale knowing he's injured?

Colts organization did it with Andrew Luck in 2016. GM and head coach eventually were fired from it.... So yes it does happen, but in this case I agree... I don't think there is anyway the Sox organization and coaching staff would risk Sale if he was hurt.

Luck actually had a really good season in 2016, including a career high in Y/A and his second best QBR.

The real mismanagement of Luck came in 2017 when they kept teasing the world with a comeback they knew was never coming....

The real question is, if Sale has an injury, how has he hidden it from our crack medical staff?

By letting them examine him?

He had a good season however he missed a good portion of 2015 and a couple games in 2016.... Whether it was the shoulder or not we might never know. But they came out last year and said Luck has had shoulder problems for the last 4 seasons. We will never know exactly how serious the organization thought it was but I think they suspected something was up and played him through a lot of injury. Luck came out and said himself he had chronic shoulder pain for a good portion of his career in Indy and it finally caught up to him in 2017 when he missed the season after the surgery. Which goes back to, yes it does happen. If sale is playing through an injury but says he is good enough to play the organization and coaching staff might let him. That is exactly what happened to Luck. Sometimes it's not always on the coach and training staff as maybe they x ray it and look at it, and decide it's not serious enough to shut the player down. But in my opinion with Luck that is not what happened. I think he played through a lot of pain that he shouldn't have.

A more relevant example might be Matt Clement, who destroyed his shoulder during his first All Star season in Boston, pitched through the pain, but was never the same afterwards.

Some have attributed his downfall to taking a line drive off the head. But by then his decline, while slow, appeared to have already started. In fact, his next starts after the line drive were actually better than the ones before it. Reportedly, an off-season evaluation of his shoulder revealed damage was far beyond what he should have been pitching through. But Clement, line drive and all, somehow managed 32 starts for the Sox that year.

Clement started 12 ineffective games for Boston the next season, and then never pitched in MLB again...

Good call on that!! I forgot all about that. Sports can be brutal. You want to trust players won’t play through that kind of pain and injury but the competitive spirit can make you do crazy things. None the less I still don’t think that is the case with Sale.... At least I hope not.

Here is the latest update from the Sox' chief medical officer , Dr . Vinnie Boombatz : When asked about the condition of Sale's shoulder ; the good doctor replied , " Which shoulder ? ".

Vinnie Boombatz... What a name, and what a personality. Why isn't this man famous?

He was made semi - famous by his former patient , the late , great Rodney Dangerfield . Definitely before your time .

Caddyshack is still a great movie!!! I miss Dangerfield, incredible actor. His role in Natural Born Killers was fantastic as well.

Yeah, but I've seen Caddyshack more times than I can count and it gets funnier each time

He was a halfway decent actor . Stand up comedy was his game .

The only real acting he did was “Natural Born Killers.” Even in Caddyshack, he was basically doing his stand up persona with the insults directed outward instead of inward...

Good point. That man's insults were legendary back then.

I thought he was great in Back to School, with a little bit of comedic acting involved.

i understand that it has been done but once again my bet would be that any sane individual would not think that they would yard an injured Chris Sale out to the mound. Makes 0 sense.

Yes, we were all shocked the Academy ignored him there...

Unless they were unaware the full extent of any injury. See Clement, Matt...

I got you earlier with the Matt Clement story. I'm going with the fact that times have changed. The way i read the thread title led me to think that someone suggested the Red Sox might have put an injured Chris Sale on the mound. In my opinion that is laughable.

The Academy doesn't know s***.

If this is the same Academy that gave virtually no awards at all to “Journey 2: Mysterious Island,” you may be right....

Ya I agree, I also trust Cora to never let anything like that happen. Not to mention.... Chris Sale (without the fastball) looked so damn good in his second start. Had some control issues early but that 3rd, 4th, 5th inning especially was rock solid. Don't think he could have played that well if he had some bad injury.

The Sox have stated that it's part of their plan and not injury related.

And you've come to this conclusion after having tea and crumpets with him? :)

The bottom line is as much as we like to think we know something about the players on our favorite teams, the reality is we know very little about who they really are.

I know things.
