Most of the numbers I use are old school. I don't consider OPS as all that "modern."

 

I do like UZR/150 quite a bit, though, just because Fld% and range factor are so severely flawed.

Fielding percentage and Range Factor are useless. Range Factor especially, since it has nothing to do with range. It’s only good for comparing 2 players who play the same position on the same team...

This is what has ruined NBA. Players run the league.

 

Cora is our manager. He obviously thinks Vazquez can be our #1 catcher.

 

Maybe we need to trade both Sale and Price along with Sandy. Because he is the only one that can catch the two.

 

Cora is not going to let the players run the show. He is in complete charge. That said, one of the things that makes him such an effective manager is that he is willing to listen to his players and he takes their input into consideration. At least, that's my impression of how things are based of what I've read and seen.

 

Pitchers who are really good can usually throw to any catcher and not miss a beat. However, if it gives a pitcher more confidence and comfort to throw to a certain catcher, and said pitcher and catcher have developed a relationship to the point where they know each other extremely well and are very effective together, why mess with a good thing?

Flip a coin and move on I say. It will make 0 difference whether it is Vazquez or Leon. they are obviously both better catchers than Swihart at this time but that really isn't saying much. Keep all three - it will make 0 difference. What a conundrum right. Oh my god - which one of our solid backups will get the job on day 1?

So true, but DD has given us so little to talk about this off-season that we have a 23 page thread dedicated to who should be the backup catcher. And even still no decision seems imminent...

or with GM xyz who wants a particular 1 of the 3 in a trade. it could be DD will give up whichever one is asked for.....(regardless of the preference he or Cora have in who they want to keep)

I still think it's going to come down to which catcher brings the best in trade value. Not necessarily the best pieces, as that would be Vazquez, IMO, but the most bang for the buck.

Swihart is having a great spring. He will either be traded for something pretty valuable or he will make the team over Sandy Leon.

I really don't think a great ST'ing increases or decreases a player's value all that much.

 

Swihart might be slightly more valuable now than he was at the end of last year.

There is still that lingering feeling that Leon is what he is , but Swihart might have much more to offer if given enough opportunity. That's not to say that it would happen , just that the feeling is there . Hence , the reluctance to deal Swihart.
