Shawaryn is a RH specialist long term. Houck has been better his last 4 starts, but his season line isn't one to be touted as anything special and I still think he's a reliever. Groome was an understandable pick, although has the sox known about the family issues, he would have been a hard pass where they were selecting.

Why would the Sox have passed on Groome because of his father? Do teams avoid Josh Donaldson because of his dad?

Groome’s father is a completely different human being that the Sox didn’t draft...

Notable DD draftees:

2016:

Dalbec

Jay Grrome

Chatham

Shawaryn

Not bad considering where we were slotted (12th, 51, 88, 118, 148).

2017:

Houck 24

Brannen 63

Scherff 161

Not so good but bad slots

2018

Casas 26

Decker 64

Feltman 100

Ward 160

Granberg 190

J Duran 220

Actually, apparently a very good draft considering the slots.

Jacko has been on this “family issues” kick ever since it popped up with Groome.

Donaldson's dad was in prison well before he was picked. Also, Josh was the 48th pick in the draft. Groome's dad got charged immediately after the draft and Groome was the 12th pick in the draft. The combination of timing and draft spot would have had the sox pass if they knew his dad was actively doing illegal activity in the home right up and through the draft.

Did Donaldson’s dad affect his play on the field?

Maybe the 'chip on his shoulder' made him better. Who knows? Only Jax knows, I guess.

Why? They weren’t drafting his dad.

I don’t think anyone would have passed on Groome because of his dad. His outrageous signing demands were another matter...

Also for the record, his dad was arrested 13 months after Groome was drafted.

Either try Mejia in MLB or release him. Otherwise, what good is DD’s big off-season bullpen addition doing?

Have you even look at Mejia performances? 1.515 WHIP with 6.00 ERA.

His 7.00 ERA isn’t supported well by his 4.22 FIP. And most of the damage has only come in a small number of outings for him.

But most important - he’s already here and they don’t have to give up anything to give him a try. And that is VERY important since Dombrowski doesn’t appear to want to add anyone to this bullpen from the outside. So we keep seeing Josh Smith/Josh Taylor/Ryan Weber/Marcus Walden types out there in key situations in the middle innings. How many more times should that happen? Is that the preferred solution - to keep floating in the sinking ship with the only course of action being to hope it stops sinking?

I'm with you. Try him.

I am starting to wonder if Dave is slipping into dementia or something.

Mejia is getting ripped in the minors. His walk rate isn't terrible for a high velo reliever, but he is getting battered with a near .300BAA. He's also been remarkably consistent in his suckitude. He had a 5 game stretch earlier in the year where he didn't allow a run, but he has only pieced together two 3 game scoreless runs since and he has allowed multiple runs in 4 of his last 9 appearances. He is a gas can

Only Brewer is doing well, although I wanted him demoted earlier in the year.

Dalbec up to 865 OPS

I know there is not much difference between AA & AAA, but I'd like to see Dalbec in AAA after the AS break. Maybe even move Casas up a notch, but I trust the Sox to know what is best.

Dalbec is hitting .235 last 10 games. 5 HRS gives the illusion he is a good hitter. He strikes out once every 3 at bats. He has 11 errors, but that about the norm for him. Throughout his career at 3rd, he's a .930 Fielding Percentage guy.

By this time Dalbec should be figuring out the guys, he will struggle when promoted and faces even tougher competition.

He does seem like the most likely trade chip this summer, but with Chavis' success and openings at 2B and 1B next year, we may keep him in the fold. Chavis could play 2B and Dalbec 1B.

You see either. I have. In the Minors. Saw Chavis last year, Lowell and Portland and Dalbec this year.

You seem to Post like you've seen them. If that's true, then I apologize. Chavis, I liked years ago, when many on this site said he was not a good Defensive 3rd Baseman. I liked him there. He's played 2nd, and 1st in the Majors. Bad Defensive, or Fundamentals, follows you everywhere. Chavis always had great feet. Dalbec doesn't, he's a Buffalo. Dalbec should be a 1st Baseman, and hopefully his 3rd base work will help him, as a Major League first baseman I hope the Sox, move him.

I've seen both play once in Portland.

I will say, Dalbec is twice the defender Chavis is at 3B, and I'm not the only one who thinks that.

BTW, I did mention Chavis at 2B and Dalbec at 1B next year.
