Smart observation. When the #9 hitter burns several fouls off with 2 strikes, he gets the pitcher wondering, "What does it take?" Kemp apparently had the highest BA and OBP for a #9 hitter this season.

He has to get outs on less pitches than this especially with the guys at the bottom of their order. He can afford to get stretched out by the guys at the top of their order. If he lets both top and bottom stretch him out he won't make it through 5 innings in this park.

Can you imagine how difficult it is to pitch in a ML ballgame and then have your manager instruct you not to let the opposing batters hit anything towards 3rd base? That's too much to ask of any pitcher. It would be easier to just acquire a real 3rd baseman.
