Who are you feeling most confident with pitching in the playoffs?

Actually if the way the series plays out we have to play two games in MF Yankee Stadium and Sale is still not Sale, I have more confidence in Porcello than any of the other LH pitchers we have. They simply cannot pitch in that stadium. Porcello has to pitch and pitch well in Yankee Stadium. If we could win two games here, before having to go there, that would be GREAT!

I have no confidence in any of our LH arms there other than the arm of a healthy Sale. In fact, depending on how it goes I might be willing to start Wright in one of the Stadium games just to avoid Erod or Price there. Erod has had good games there. But I do not like what I am seeing from Erod right now.

In fact I like that idea the more i think about it. If we get outta' here without having used Wright much or at all, I would likely go Porcello and then Wright in Yankee Stadium.

Eovaldi does okay in NY, but I like Wright a lot.

I picked Porcello, too, as the one who might step up and lead us to the next round.

Sale should get two at Fenway, if it goes 5. I like that.

Price could pitch game 2 and come in as a RP'er in Fenway game 5.

We need Porcello, Eovaldi and Wright to carry us in NY. Maybe ERod can step it up in NY.

Wright has only started 4 games this year, so disregarding one of those four is really not painting an accurate picture. I'm not trying bash Wright. IMO, he has been very good. But I don't agree with the idea of him starting over Sale or Price.

You do understand I'm advocating Wright start and pitch just 2 innings, right?

Sure sounded like a playoff game when Judge hit one out in the 1st last night.

Sounded more like a play-in game crowd to me.

At first, I thought this plan was stupid. Wirght for 2 innings and then Sale? You only throw a few hitters off balance for 1 plate appearance, and then its' business as usual.

But the more I thought about it, there is some merit, since it would ideally be the first 6 (and presumably the best 6) Yankee hitters. and if Wright can get through the top 2 as close to cleanly as possible, it might have enough of an effect to throw them off for their second PA as well. While no real plan can ruin some of these top tier MLB hitters for an entire game, taking them down and messing them up for 2 PAs can be significant.

Of course, if Wright gets hammered in the first two innings, it doesn't matter much...

And if Wright shits the bed and allows 3 runs in the first because it's just one of those days where the knuckler isn't moving....?

but wouldnt it be the same outcome if Sale started and wright relieved? and then Kimbrel after wright would add a 3rd level of messing them up.

Does Judge's HR count towards his regular season stats?

No. But it's a case of 'well, they have to go somewhere.'

I'm just messing around with this thing, I really don't care. But these wild card games fall into a kind of never-never land between the regular season and the LDS. They certainly have a lot more in common with the Bucky Dent game than they do with the playoffs that start tonight.

I don't really care either.

But the fact remains that MLB declared them play off games, no matter what someone fantasizes about in their own little world........

Anybody who puts up a picture like that shouldn't have any issues about fantasizing LOL

When MLB said "this time it really counts" did it really count?

Nope.

It doesn't matter what they say. Not the playoffs.

Pretty much what I said in the last line of the post.

I see the merit in the idea, but I wouldn't recommend it...

I think he's fine as a change of pace guy in the pen, starting a game tho? Woof...

He might simply be the mop up guy. Bring him in if you're down big early. If he holds the opposing hitters long enough for the Sox to get back in the game, great. And if the Sox never make a game of it, at least the other relievers don't get burned out chasing an unwinnable game...

I'm very good with this one too.

I admit using Wright to start and go 2 innings is pretty wild, but what you propose is just wrong. You don't waste Wright on an unwinnable game when he had by far the best September in the bullpen. Heck, if you take out just 1 game, his disastrous start June 22 when he gave up 10 runs, he has pitched in 19 games, gone 50 innings, and has an ERA of 1. In September he pitched 13.2 innings in relief and gave up 1 earned run for an ERA of .66.

Plus Wright is versatile--unlike Kimbrel. He can go more than 1 inning--3 or 4 if you want--and in any inning.

This is the postseason, and no way, no how should Cora leave anyone in long enough to make the game unwinnable. If the starter falters early, pull him and bring in Wright before the game gets out of hand. You want a long reliever after the damage is done, go with ERod.

How is a 0-0 game in the first inning "unwinnable?"

Because you can’t win a game with a tie score?

LOL.

I guess you can never bring in Wright after 5 or 6 innings, if the score is 0-0 or 2-2. The game is totally unwinnable.

I'm confused as to how this is your takeaway from his post. Try reading it again.

I read it twice the first time.

You are misreading it. notin proposed using Wright as a mopup guy if the Sox fall way behind and Max disagreed with that.

i.e. don't let the game get out of hand. If Wright is so versatile, you can just pop him in to keep the game close and winnable.

Okay. I missed the post he was responding to. My bad.

I do. But I don't understand what the advantage is of Wright starting, followed by Sale versus Sale starting, followed by Wright. I prefer the latter.

Yankees fans, what do you expect.

With their chants of "We want Boston!" Well, of course they want Boston. The alternative would be to go home.
