My first though, when I saw Sale come in, was that we were going all out to win game 4 at the expense of game 5. I didn't think they use Sale for 1 inning and then let him start game 5. It's not a normal hard-throwing day.

I did not expect Sale to come out in the 9th, but I had a lot more faith in him than Kimbrel, and I even said it last night before Kimbrel imploded.

If we couldn't win with sale in the 9th, we probably weren't going to win with him in game 5.

Now, in hindsight, I can see the reasoning about limiting Sale to 1 IP, so he can give us meaningful and multiple innings in game 5, if needed, but now that I'm looking in hindsight, I'm thinking we could have tried this....

6 Porcello

1 Barnes

1 Brazier

1 Sale

with Kimbrel available if anyone started a fire.

The reason Porcello was replaced with Barnes in the 6th was because the Yankees muscle was due up and it was their third look at Porcello.

Smith would seem to be worth a shot at $1.2 million, assuming he's healed.

He’s missed almost all of the last two seasons and didn’t have a lengthy track record before that.

He might be obtainable on a minor league deal. Certainly no one is going multiple years on Smith...

Sale not great but kept us in it.

Kelly, Barnes & braz were nails until Cora inexplicably goes to Workman in the 9th inning of a 3-2 game where he predictably took a dump on the mound allowing 4 runs to turn a possible chance to get a walkoff into a blowout.

Price not really good but Xander really f***ed him with a lackadaisical play.

JBj with a CLUTCH bases clearing wall ball and kimbrel with a shaky 9th but we get a split at home and head to Houston needing to win at least 1 to get it back to the Fens.

Well it didnt take long to snatch HFA back.

Scored 2 early and 6 late. Evo pitched awesome again. braz, kelly, & erod were nails and barnes scared us for a second but limited the damage.

my MAN JBj! grand salami. Pearce with another big hit and another great stretch. 3rd base D showed it's ugly head but the 6 run inning hid it.

5 W down, 6 to go......

this game almost cost TS a ton of posters to heart attacks. i still feel woozy this morning.

Pitching

Rik didnt have it tonight. i am thinking it is due to his relief work keeping him from being sharp in this game.

Kelly came in the 5th and the ball was coming out of his hand really good but gave up a couple weak hits and a stolen base to cost us a run.

Erod was brought in to face 1 batter and walked him. smh.

Braz was nails for 1.2 and then barnes came in and threw some nasty hooks to get 1 out in the 7th.

this is where things got weird. why not go back to barnes for the 8th and just have kimbrel warm in case needed? instead cora goes to kimbrel for 6 out save which was very very very bad for our collective blood pressure. if not for a FANTASTIC benintendi catch diving for a sinking liner we would be 2-2 now. alas, the kid made the catch and we are on the verge.

hitting:

everyone in the lineup chipped in. and more importantly we answered right away everytime Houston scored.

JBj with another bomb.

would be very nice to close this series out tonight and not have to burn Sale for a game 6.

6 down, 5 more to go.

Cora - for better or worse - laid out to win Game 5. So we have 3 chances to win this ... Barnes facing 1 batter allows him to be available today. Given that Cora clearly planned to get 6 outs from Kimbrel - Barnes being available was probably part of the strategy.

I expect Eovaldi is available for an inning tonight - let's see if Price can get through the order twice.

The one bit of solace I have in this series is that, as bad as Kimbrel has been, the entire Astros bullpen has been far, far worse.

So far they have walked in and hit batters with the bases loaded multiple times and given up a crushing grand slam, and were only bailed out from worse damage last night by a diving Web Gem by Josh Reddick...

Yes, there's been plenty of bad pitching by the Stros, and they were easily the best staff in baseball this year.

It's a crazy freaking game.

Notin , " One bit of solace " ? Gee whiz. The Sox are 6-2 , 4-0 on the road against the best competition around. Let the Yankee and Astro fans seek the solace.

I needed an intro for my statement. Don't look too deep into message boards for the atmosphere.

My belly button is puckering and unpuckering with excitement just like everyone else's around here...

Thankfully for you it is your belly button that is doing the puckering.

I didn't crawl in until 1:30 (which is a recent record for me by the way) and when you reach my state of "maturity" sometimes it doesn't matter when you hit the sack you still wake up at the same time - 5:00 max.

Slasher can you work some of your magic and speed this game up a bit tonight?

I got 4 hours of sleep, but still feel energized by last night's win. I'm walking on my toes around these slunched- shouldered 'stros fans and lovin' it!

The game starts 30 minutes earlier, right? That's a little help.

I just turned 60. I think I inherited a gene from my dad, who often went to work on 2-4 hours of sleep for days on end.

He's 92, now, and take naps, but still rarely gets 6-7 hours of sleep.

I forgot you are near Houston, I have relatives on the other side of Houston, in The Woodlands.

Did you go to any of the games, I heard tickets weren't all that expensive down there for tonights game.

I've got you by 10+ and I still usually get 7-8 hours/night. That was hard to do last night when I didn't get to bed until 2:00 though - and regularly wake up at 6:30. :-)

The good news is that tonight's game should be over before 1:00! Of course when they win I'll have to stay up to listen to the wrap-ups on numerous stations.

And I missed my afternoon nap today, too. Ugh. Poor planning.

I did not go to any playoff games.

I went to 2 of the 3 regular season games, though.

RED SOX WIN THE PENNANT

ALCS Game 5

Red Sox 4

Astros 1

David Price.

Mr. Price took the postseason demons to the woodshed. pitched an absolute gem and outdueled this guy called Verlander. Very happy for DP.

our offense relied on the long ball as all 4 of our runs scored on JDM (solo) and young Devers (3R) bombs.

it was enough.

Barnes for 2 outs in the 7th.

Evo for 7th & 8th.

and Mr. Automatic to close out the 9th. (none of us were worried).

Road Warriors. we have won all 5 road games this postseason. perhaps Kimmi is on to something with the HFA is meaningless rhetoric.

Cora pushed all the right buttons in the ALCS. our boys get a much needed (and earned) 4 days off before the WORLD SERIES begins.

7 down, 4 to go.

As it turns out, Kimmi was right about us "not needing Sale."

(Did I just say that?)

I had no idea you were so much older than me. ;) You 'sound' younger. Or maybe it's that picture of the youthful Dewey that does it...

One of the few things Kimmi was not right about.

I sound younger because we're in different time zones. You're an hour ahead of me.

:D

Of course I'm also a hour behind Moon.

That was such a a good game, I even sort of like Price today!

I thought the bullpen would be the Achilles Heel for this team,,but they did much better than the Astro's pen, even with the shaky performances from Kimbrel.

It's amazing that the games were so high scoring, considering the excellent defense played by both sides.

Yup, if he can give us two more games like last night, that'll go a long way in getting the talking heads and the fan base off his back.

That was a classic. I almost lost control and had another beer (not unusual) when i saw 96 pop up on the gun. I'm pulling hard for him.
