Like I said the other night, they really do not like each other at all and frankly almost came to blows in what was yet another of those NESN moments when the production staff SHOULD NOT have taken the cameras into the booth. It was not pretty and I expected that night that Lyons was going to put his fist right through OB's face. I mean it was really bad and once the NESN cameras were in the booth and it was happening live the production crew just did not know what to do about it.

I'd love to see and hear Rice in the booth. I'm surprised that hasn't happened.

I doubt they would pair OB, the main announcer, with a guy who he hates. Its just not good business.

I liked Gomes there. What happened with him?

It seems to me that Lyons throws a lot of barbs toward O'B and O'B tries to take the high road and ignore it but instead becomes sarcastic.

NESN doesn't trust Gomes in the booth. He puts everyone in the truck to sleep and TC & Co. are afraid of what might happen. :P

This is nothing compared to how bad it was a few years ago.

So the booth incident went as follows:

NESN production used that camera in the booth that is remote controlled. It sits to the left of OB and of course OB is left of Lyons or whomever else is there. The spot started calmly enough. But OB in that sometimes snarky manner of his looks over at Lyons scorecard and says with the camera right there, "look at that scorecard. What a mess. You can't possibly make any sense of that". Lyons just trying to defend himself says "Easy for you to say, you have the production crew score the game for you and just carry up these neat updated scorecards to you every few innings".

Well that was it. OB suddenly got caught with his pants around his ankles with his credibility as baseball play by play guy also around his ankles. He retorts "but but but, I have to do play by play". That was a pretty weak retort given what he said to Lyons and the snarky invective in OB's voice when he said it.

Lyons hears that suddenly wimpy defensive reply and goes right back after OB's throat. "That is your excuse for not keeping your own scorecard....that its just too hard for the play by play guy. Thats news to me."

Now OB losses it completely and really is just stuttering he is so mad and the production crew is I guess aghast because they don't cut back to anything, a commercial, anything. At this point they are both red and shouting at each other and I swear to God it looked like Lyons was one second from putting one of those big paws of his right through OB's face. Remember this is before Lyons had his ......."treatment" and his temper is legendary.

They contain it pretty well. But they are not friends and they make this work as best they can when they are thrown together in the booth. I don't think it would work at all with the Steve Lyons we knew for all of his playing career and most of the time since. If folks think booth crews or all celebrity teams are friendly by the way, that would be beyond naive.

OB does have a snarky superior attitude that does not stand him well, particularly around some athletes...not nearly as easy to deal with as Don was.

Had 'em all the way. Great game, I watched it all at work because we had basically no business all night. No customers to disturb by shouting at the TV. And as icing on the cake, there are two TVs above the bar so I got to watch the Sox score 19 and win and the Yankees lose all at the same time.

Thanks Jung. I didn’t know that story.

I miss don. He was the best.

O’Brien homerun calls are pathetic

I agree. Orsillo was a damn good play by play guy. NESN's firing of him with no explanation was unclassy as hell. Well, the SOX loss was the Padres' gain.

I hope this doesn't take Lyons out of the booth. I was skeptical about him at first, but he's really gained confidence and actually calls it like it is. I'm sick of the sugar coating that most of the Nesn guys do. I love the fact that he not only will criticize fairly, but will call out his Nesn buddies when they are being soft. He's quickly becoming my favorite sports personality, maybe even more thab Eck! (I love Eck)

OB is a little terd. Oh great you have TV voice and can do basic play by play... I'm watching the game, not listening to it on the radio. I dont need you telling me what i just saw. Give me another guy who can actually provide baseball insight and who isn't just a company man...

End rant

That is well said.

I think NESN is forced to work Lyons in somehow. Remy's days in the booth are numbered clearly and Eck won't travel. But that snarky, superior attitude that OB has is in part why I called BS on the Nolan Ryan story. That is just the sort of story that a guy that never played would fall for so hard that he would repeat it. Enter dingdong OB, trying to relate something that HE thinks is interesting that just sounds like BS to anybody that played any sort of serious organized sports at almost any level from HS on.

I found the Fox Sports San Diego FB and started to follow. Occasionally they post videos of the games as Don calls a big play like a homer.

It's wicked cool to hear Don while being a little strange because of the teams and names.

Benintendi has 8 more RBI than Betts does. If Betts wasn't batting leadoff he'd have about 200 RBI right now.

He wouldn't have Betts getting on base in front of him, though.

This is why they need to change the rules about lineups and substitutions and position changes. They need to be allowed to just bat JD and Betts over and over again, putting in pinch runners as needed. But MLB has politely asked me to stop emailing them.

What story is that?

I don’t know much about OB on TV, but I loved him on the radio with Castiglione, and I really miss him. The guys who call games with Joe now are boring as hell. OB and Joe together were a fun team. I guess TV and radio announcement take completely different skill sets. OBs attention to detail is great for radio but I can see how it might not translate to TV. More space to fill up with chatter when you don’t have to narrate every tiny bit of every at bat could definitely hamstring a guy like OB.

Good Post. Loved him on radio too.

I honestly enjoy listening to good radio broadcasts of games and almost never have the sound on when watching a game on TV. When the Sox are at Baltimore and I am enroute, I enjoy the Orioles announcers. The WEEI (I think) crew are fine when the Sox are in boston or elsewhere and I am enroute and can pick them up via mlb.com audio.
