Eduardo Rodriguez, lefty vs. Erick Fedde, righty

Start time of 11:05 (they started this in 2012) because a lot of people will want to get into DC today for the 4th--so happy Independence Day, everyone! I myself will be going to Arlington National Cemetery--thus the early start to this thread.

Game time temp is supposed to be 86.

Chances are ERod will continue to rely on his fastball and cut fastball and struggle as he has his last two times. Fedde meanwhile got his first career win last time out. Sox can't possibly win this game and Cora should negotiate surrender terms at the pregame meeting with the umps.

A shout out to moonslav59 who drove 14 hours yesterday from TX to KY and is headed for Montreal (and NC and ME and NYC and FL and New Orleans) and 5 weeks of traveling vacation.

101 years ago today LTC Charles E. Stanton, an aide to GEN Pershing, visited the tomb of Lafayette in Paris and said, "Lafayette, we are here!" American women served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France, primarily as contract nurses, but none took an oath of allegiance and of course none were allowed to vote.

155 years ago today the Union forces under George Meade and Confederate forces under Lee had just completed the bloodiest battle in American history at Gettysburg. The same day Confederate forces at Vicksburg surrendered to Grant's Union forces.

243 years ago today George Washington was settling in at Boston, the headquarters of the fledgling Continental Army he now commanded. The Declaration of Independence was still a year away.

8 years from today the United States will celebrate our 250th 4th of July.

"Sometimes you can observe a lot by watching". One of the things I enjoy about coming here is that I get to learn about the other posters, their interests and their lives and I'm always taken by how different we are, but with that common thread running through all of us of loving the Red Sox.

Max, I am humbled by your knowledge of history.

Happy 4th to everyone. It's supposed to be hot all over the country today so don't forget to rehydrate freely. :D

Thanks for the hydration reminder, S5Dewey. I'm a 72 oz/day guy mostly because I have to be--made a little easier by doing 24 oz on the way to work and 24 oz on the way home.

Today taking a son and daughter and their spouses to visit their grandparents at ANC, which is getting crowded but is still beautiful and overlooks the National Mall, from which you can also see ANC--across the Potomac and Memorial Bridge. That link and that Mall are reminders that America does not forget our veterans because we are, in the end, a nation made by wars. I hope that I am anti-war. I do believe that the Declaration of Independence was and is far less important than the Constitution written and passed 11 years later in 1787 and finally ratified in 1789. Since that date all veterans have sworn, upon entry into our armed services, to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America."

And, quite honestly, I can't think of a better way to celebrate the 4th than by attending and/or watching our national pastime. Whether true or not, I like the Walt Whitman maybe-quote in Bull Durham: "I see great things in baseball. It's our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us."

General Washington gave double rations of Rum to the troops on this date 242 years ago to celebrate.

Sounds like a wonderful day. We had tentative plans to take in a game tonight at our local minor league park but with heat indices headed for 105 into the early evening, that's not happening.

We had our main fireworks display here last night; they fire them up from a couple of barges on the Mississippi River. Great show. Unfortunately, it was a tragic event for one group of people. They were watching the show when a large tree limb from an old oak came down (no wind, it just decided it was time). One person was killed and five others injured. Definitely puts everything in perspective (I didn't see it, it was a few blocks away).

Be safe and have fun everyone.

Beni, Bogaerts, and Moreland all with the day off. Moreland is dealing with back spasms, but this was a scheduled day off for him to begin with.

I understand the idea of resting players regularly. I don't understand why Cora would rest 3 starters in the same game. I'm guessing the early start time has something to do with it, but Cora has done this before.

Yikes. What a tragic thing to happen. It sure does put things into perspective and reminds us not to take anything, including our freedom, for granted.

Happy 4th to everyone!

If E-Rod starts attacking the strike zone, and stops this nibbling crap, even with some of the Regulars sitting, we should be OK.

This guy Fedde almost same kind of Pitcher, lot of Pitches, not many innings. Only difference he gets hit hard, when he throws strikes.

I think this will be a BP game, might see Thornburg today? He was activated.

Sorry Happy 4th to everybody.

I sometimes think Cora 'judges the opposition' before deciding who to sit on any particular day. Then on another day he does something completely off the wall and it works. So I dunno.

I am sure Cora has his reasons, and I'm sure they are valid reasons. I disagree with him resting 3 starters on the same day, but I can't argue with the success that the team has had.

Fedde has an ERA of 6, so hopefully the offense will have no problems scoring runs.

I really hates Vazquez starting. It seems we play like s*** with him.

Red Sox winning % when Vaz plays: .655

Red Sox winning % when Leon plays: .605

We have a very good catching tandem. IMO, we're good to go regardless of who starts.

I'm going to keep an eye if E-Rod shakes off Vazquez today. Eck just said they are not using the Change-up enough. He said its his 2nd best pitch.

My guess he nibbles and has many 0 and 2 counts end up 3 and 2 counts. And he shakes off many calls.

And I actually dig ERod. He has a cool smooth delivery even touching mid 90s. I just like bitching about him.

Your posting has been worse.

No but if you would put down the pom poms down and the lipstick and get off your knees you would know this.

Funny thing, Harper never has 100+ RBI's in a season, yet he is hitting .218 this year and has a good chance at getting 100+RBI's.

Funny game.

3 very good posts today putting our country in a bit of perspective. I was at Arlington National last year for my father's inurnment and it is an beautiful final resting place for those that served. Hope to visit it again next year. Here's to a great day and good game.

C'mon JBJ. Nobody on base and two outs - the perfect time to lay down a bunt. Even if you're not successful you show the defense that it's in your repitoir (Sp?).

And what was Devers thinking? He left way early once and got away with it. Did he think they wouldn't notice??
