Actually Vaz could not really make an effort to control the throw. An actual effort to just catch the ball naturally would likely have resulted in Perez just flat beating the throw. Vaz gambled and lost. But had he not gambled, he would have lost anyway.

 

It was still a nice throw from JD. Still does not change the obvious deficiencies JD has in the OF.

If I had to guess it is because Cora is tired of seeing Nunny barely able to keep his feet at 2nd base. He can't even stand at the position. Either his knee is still a problem or he has finally aged enough that his natural worst position in the field is now a position he simply cannot play except on an emergency basis.
