Weird that Hanley even would attempt to steal 3rd, but it got an extra run home, so okay, we'll take it.

Worth noting that here is a case where aggressive base running paid off. If he had been caught stealing, he would have been crucified for trying such a boneheaded thing.

Most of the time, whether a play is a great play or a boneheaded play is determined after the fact, by whether it worked or not. The same can be said about Pillar's steal of home in the Yankees game.

Shouldn’t have traded all those prospects for a closer!

Sarcasm aside, no, we really shouldn't have.

Love it that Bogaerts and Price sure seem for real this year. And that we're tied with the Yanks at 2-1 (hey, who to hell are all those guys in the Yankee lineup...check it out) And that Craig Kimbrel is off to a great start.

I would immediately put Bogaerts in the 3 hole, the perfect 3 for me. None of this messing around with Ramirez.

As I posted elsewhere, if Bogaerts continues hitting like he is, he will be more valuable in the 5 hole than he would be in the 3 hole.

It's not the wave of the future then?

LOL Good gracious, I hope not. Pen arms will be blown out by June.

Short game thread. Sox must have won.

Wrong, Max.

Game 1 loss-181 posts

Game 2 win-210 posts (more than 181 :D)

Game 3 win-96 posts

I've tried to explain this before, but Saturday game threads always tend to have the least traffic. But some folks just don't pay attention.

It's like some people actually have lives or something.

7.1 of the IP were covered by 2 guys, which makes it sort of a piggyback game.

It's interesting if nothing else.

As someone cynically pointed out, when you're a team with no chance like the Rays you can experiment.

It is only the 3rd game of the season, so those 2 pen guys were able to pitch multiple innings each. Will they be able to do that in June or later?

With most starters going fewer innings, you need those pen arms to be available for more innings in games where the 'regular' starters start.

It is interesting. We'll see how it works out.

Coaches all know the difference between bad baserunning and aggressive baserunning. It makes no difference at all whether it succeeds or not. Fans tend to laugh and clap which is all good when these mistakes turn out well. Good coaches aren't going to go nuts over these things when they work out for them either. They happen all the time but when the coach is alone with the player I'm pretty sure that if he is a good coach he'll tell the player involved that it was a stupid thing to do whether it worked out or not.

I don't disagree about the coaches.

I am talking about the fans' opinions. If Hanley had gotten caught, he would have been crucified for being so stupid. But instead, his aggressiveness led to a run, so pretty much nothing was made of it.

My point is that sometimes even when a play doesn't work out, it was still a good decision to go with. Or vice versa.

I don't disagree with any part of your post. The debate comes when people start talking about what is a good decision and what isn't. There are a ton of factors that could enter into this one. For obvious reasons I guess, I see all of these things or try to anyway from a coaches' perspective.

I think you have to factor in who is doing the aggressive running. After a while you get an idea who has high IQ baserunning skills.

Hanley is probably one of our smartest baserunners on the team and questioning his decisions to stretch out a hit or stealing probably shouldn't be done by us fans sitting at home. Hanley's judgement cannot be matched by most players in the MLB.

Being it's April first.
