Nunez may not be the only infielder we could get to fill the super utility role. I would consider the injury and look over the alternatives before jumping to the Nunez conclusion.

Of course.

An extended physical would be done before signing him.

I usually like to have great defense on the bench and with a weak left side IF defense, you'd think we'd need it even more, but with Pedey's future so unsure, I'd like a guy like Nunez on the roster. We could also have Lin or Marrero on the 25 as defensive help.

Like the physicals for Bailey, Hanrahan, Craig, Smith, Thornberg, etc.

Yeah I have such faith in the Sox brass.

We have had issues with our medical staff over the years, haven't we?

Calling them "issues' is being generous. Imo the medical staff borders on incompetent.

There was a lefthanded platoon Outfielder that we signed a number of years ago that had surgery right after we signed him and I don't think he played more than a handful of games for us. Can't remember his name, but i think that he had been an Oakland A.

Is that really the case here? Do other teams have 100% healthy staffs with no players that struggle getting back on the field?

I want Ortiz there. Pfereably as manager. We need someone who can teach AND has the authority. I've said this 100 times, and have had no response. You wanna see LIFE and ENERGY? Or another yankee!

Mal, there's been plenty of responses to this suggestion. Personally, I think Ortiz would be a horrible choice as manager. Leaving aside the fact that he's never done anything remotely like it (i.e., no experience), he's still too close to much of the team. A year ago, he was Big Papi. One of them. They aren't going to see a manager, they are going to see Big Papi. Yes, there would be enthusiasm. But there is waaaay more to the job than being head cheerleader. As somebody said earlier, there is a reason companies go outside the immediate organization for managers. It's hard to be the boss when the day before you were one of the minions.

Why would he subject himself to the fishbowl that is the Red Sox managers position?

Selfishly, I don't think I ever want to see him as a manager. He is a legend in Boston. Eventually, virtually all managers do not go out on their own terms. The ones that do have managed a long time and almost always have been fired somewhere along the way. And he would be too.

Every manger has been a first time manager! You make it sound like brain surgery. Durocher, Cronin, Boudreau, Frisch were not only first time managers but PLAYER MANAGERS. IMO you are taking a short sighted view. Plus, how do you know he wouldn't want it? Has he been approached? I don't think so.

Ugh. Ortiz as a manager is not a good idea.

He is better off playing with Eroid on Fox where he has no pressure and can come and go.

Just because a guy played really well and other players respected him does not mean that a guy can manage.

Papi ain't walking through that door.

Ortiz might make a good manager one day, but right now, he is not far enough removed as a player to be a manager.

I still say Eric Wedge would be excellent.

I don't think he will manage a team again, he had a stroke with Seattle, I just don't see him in a high pressure environment like Boston

I have no idea what other teams medical staffs look like, but I do remember being told initially that Buchholz injury from holding his baby was day-to-day and he missed nearly an entire season.

Yes, his daughter fell asleep on his arm and he got pins and needles and missed the rest of the season.

This. This is pretty much what I was thinking. One sure way to be disliked in Boston is to become manager of the Red Sox. If I were David Ortiz there's no f'ing way I'd get involved in that.

But I would like to see him as bench coach!

And we kept hearing that it's just a day or two, then just a week or two, then it became almost the entire season. If that were my arm/shoulder in question I'd be thinking the word 'incompetent' would be appropriate.

I know he had a major problem with a totally f*** FO in Seattle.

Did he actually have a stroke?

I think that was a cover story.

I think he was down in P-Town getting gnarly with some fisting.

Do you remember that pitcher who came up from AAA and had a good couple of starts and the went on the DL because he cut his back rolling out of bed onto a drinking glass. I don't think he ever pitched again for the Red Sox. That just didn't add up.
