The guy just gives up too many base runners and too many HRs. It has been a season long thing.

I am well aware of his season and have commented on it repeatedly. This is another game with its own dynamic. In the same way Sale can pitch an absolutely horrible game, Porcello can pitch a good one. And oh by the way it's now 1 run in 5 innings just like that. You guys want to throw him under the bus when he's actually pitching a pretty good game, and I am not saying he is having a good year.

Happ played with fire by throwing in to Hanley. he was darting that outside and get all calls generously.

One other thing. Happ is inducing ground balls with his two seamer. He was up to 86 pitches and this will probably be his last inning if the sox can grind here.

Besides, the hitting is the problem tonight, in my opinion anyway. We need Happ out of there.

Happ got another 3 ground balls, all on his 2 seamer. We did get him well over 100 pitchers so he may be gone. We shall see.

With the Guardians sweeping the Yankees today, we need this win--and a sweep--to keep pace. moonslav is right. Yankees aren't the issue at this point.

He just has nasty stuff, almost all of it low. Plus, as someone else said, he's getting some calls.

I didn't throw him under the bus this game at all. I have always said that if he can keep it to 1 HR, he should win the game. If he gives up a couple, we should still compete, but when he gives up 3 or he allows 10 plus hits, we are toast.

Happ is doing a great job at making our hitters going out the zone. Porcello is still throwing it down the middle.

All credit to Happ, agreed. But you are exaggerating by a fair amount what you think Porcello is not doing right. If he were doing what you say, he would get hammered. He's now gone 6, giving up 1 run and 5 hits with 1 BB and 7 K's. How in the wide world of sports is that a lousy start? In fact, given my expectations, he does exactly what I thought he couldn't do--pitched well to give the Sox a real shot on a night when Happ has great stuff, great command, and an ump with a nice strike zone.

Who has said that he is having a lousy start? Not me. I think you are arguing with yourself.

Worst game in recent memory. Porcello stinks to high heaven, and Jays score 8 big ones. Happ and the Jays bullpen hold us to 1 very lucky dinger.

Or so one would think by many comments above. Jeez.

I myself like to gripe when things are bad, but from the get go I thought I saw a better Porcello and hoped we could hit Happ (who was excellent) or maybe get to the bullpen.

As I said back on the first page of this thread, every game is different. I project outcomes all the time, but I don't ever assume that's what will happen.

Moreland is a very good PH.

Hanley has awoken after being moved to the 7th slot and JF pinch hit for Young, unlike last night and put Morelands hot bat in. He delivered on cue making JF look good.

Does anyone know why the Astros & Rangers chose to play their game in the worst stadium in baseball?

Well there was a lot of rain in Houston and ...

Availability. Astros and Rangers have 2 series left. One now and one about 4 weeks from now at Texas. Astros asked the Rangers to swap, Rangers didn't want to. So the Stros had to find another place. Rays are on the road, offered Tropicana Field and the Astros accepted.

Get a grip Maxie, the thread has not been that critical of Porcello, and no one has said that he is having a bad game. He needs to work out of trouble here after getting the lead, but Farrell doesn't trust him to do it.

Phew!! Gappers scare me when Bradley is not in the OF.

LOL. That's exactly what I came here to post! I was worried when I saw the ball hit, knowing JBJ isn't out there, but Beni got the job done. Phew!

Sure you have. Taking Porcello out with 2 outs and 2 on with 108 pitches thrown was also the right move with Scott available. Unfortunately he wasn't quite as sharp this time but at least he made that guy hit it--a liner that Beni caught. Had Farrell left Porcello in and that next better had tied the game with a bases clearing double or something, then Farrell would have been flayed for not pulling him sooner. I liked sending Scott out there, but agree he and we got a little lucky.

I missed multiple chances to blast the killer bees who tonight looked to me like honey bees. Lucky me because the killer bees just made an entrance--all 3 of them. The Jays have the best liked bullpen in the AL if not MLB.

I like we have two more series against the Jays. They just have looked like they want to roll over and die this year...
