well the "reset" still allows for a $200MM payroll. we wont have the 1998 Marlins on the field. but yes, our 2 vaunted starting pitchers will be another year older. thats what happens with LT contract signings. you eventually pay the piper. at least the piper afforded a parade after one of the seasons......

Herein lies the problem. If the Sox simply reset, allow their FAs to walk and DFA Bradley, they’ll still be over the first threshold by a few mil. Also, replacing Bradley, Porcello, et al with nobody outside the .org could be worse than what you have. With the Rays and Yanks in division and in the middle of their own windows, you won’t be competitive. It’s gonna be an interesting winter for Boston. Being in the range you are in now offers you nothing. Baseball punishes mediocrity. You’ve either gotta be good or terrible. Another season in the 80 win territory wouldn’t be good for you. Either blow this s*** up or go for it.

under Slasher9's plan we are under the LT for next season. we are back the following year with a top ten farm and plenty of cash to spend.

Yes, and one that can bring scouts and developers that know how to bring great young arms to the bigs.

I'm not pissed at DD at all. He did what he was supposed to do, but it's time to pay the piper.

Call it "the window" or "the cliff" or whatever you wish, but it sure snuck up on us faster than most of us expected. (Some denied it would ever happen.)

the cliff is right on time. thank God for the parade.

I agree that this happened sooner than I expected. I thought what we had would get us through 2019 and probably until Mookie's contract was up. I still think that was a reasonable expectation.

I never denied a downturn, but if this year is what a cliff looks like it's something I can live with. Especially since that banner that says "World Series Champions 2018" flies @ Fenway Park.

Sportrac has the Sox at $57mill below the first threshold prior to arbitration cases. The Sox have 4 likely expensive arb cases in Betts, Bradley, Barnes and Benintendi. Not likely this reached $57mill, but the Sox could come uncomfortably close.

Betts is a tough call, but with that type of headroom I think they keep him, pay him, and reset.

Benintendi is an obvious choice.

Bradley is an extremely likely non-tender. At $8.8mill this year, he might get $11mill+ in arbitration (depending on what each side offers). His overall play just doesn’t justify that salary.

Barnes might be in the $3-4mill range tops. But if it comes down to it, I could see the Sox moving him. (Atlanta?) I hope they don’t think he could convert to starting....

We can reset with just a couple minor non tenders or a trade of a big contract and paying just some of it.

Filling all the voids with kids from the system or very cheap FAs would likely put us near 80 wins, which if we keep it to one year, would be okay with me.

Hell, we may only get 80 wins this year!

Didn’t the Sox trade Shaw a few years ago? And why trade Chavis when you’ll probably get back a prospect worse than Chavis?

Also this team will suck for 3 years minimum. Pass...

Nobody wants to trade Chavis for a worse prospect.

I think we keep Chavis, since he can play 1B or 2B, and we are open at both positions.

My confidence has fallen on him, as his OPS has been below .700 since his first 14 games. That's not good enough for 1B, and although he's looked okay on defense, I'm not sure he's good enough to stay at 2B longterm.

yeah...sam travis is who i meant. i do that all the time with travis shaw.

sell high on Chavis (even though high was a few months ago).

the team will not suck for 3 years minimum. after next year we have Betts back and take a look at the FA class for 2021.

or...we could not reset and not trade anyone and still suck for the next 3 years with all the players we currently have. and have a bottom 5 farm. that would be the DD plan. PASS.....

I was thinking 72-74 wins for 2020 but 68 is entirely possible.

It would take serious balls from the front office to do this.
