Using Hembree in that situation begs the question, is Kelly unavailable or have they moved Barnes from the 8th inning role?

Kelly's the 8th inning guy now I'd say. Barnes was used in a virtual mopup role against LA this weekend.

And so much for that theory. :P

Is it safe for me to rejoin the thread? I had to suspend things because I was washing windows tonight and got the whole upstairs. But I had the ipad on and could listen and occasionally watch. Gutsy game by Sale, fantastic GIDP by Hembree, three great K's in a row by Barnes, and of course typically letter perfect managing by Farrell both on the lineup--Lin in for a cast of thousands--and the bullpen.

Solid all around game by everyone even though Bogie does chase a lot of breaking stuff away.

I suggested we move Kelly to the 8th and Barnes to the 7th about a week ago.

Barnes did pitch the 8th tonight and got 3 Ks, so maybe Kelly hasn't "won the job" yet.

Perhaps because Kelly pitched last night, he wasn't available. i'm going to suggest that it isn't all that important to designate a 7th inning guy and an 8th inning guy. I don't think that these guys care as much about that type of routine as we do. they have an idea as to when they are most likely to pitch.

Till the next Sale start.

I can remember when Sale was the ace that was going to push us over the top. Now he's the ace who keeps us in contention.

Buddy Boshers...nice handle...where's YOTN?

When Buddy Boshers is done with baseball, he absolutely has to open his own chain of fried chicken restaurants somewhere in rural West Virginia. That name is wasted in baseball. Combined with the fact that he looks like an extra from The Hills Have Eyes who never bothered to take his makeup off, when I look at his face, I can almost hear him arguing at a town hall meeting that he should be allowed to sell cigarettes and fireworks out of his restaurant if he f***ing wants to.

Also, all four Twins pitchers in this game have surnames that begin with "B". That's not really important, but I thought it was interesting. Probably because I am a strange person.

Yes, I noticed that too.

I'm fine with Kelly in the 8th, but I also like that he can be thrown in there earlier when trouble might be brewing. I think he's already done that at least a couple of times. It's like when Farrell brings Kimbrel in to pitch the 8th with men already on base.

Kimbrel and Kelly have easily the best pitching WAR ratings among the Sox relievers--and it isn't even close with respect to the others. But just maybe Kelly is the wild card up Farrell's sleeve.

It sure would be nice if Kelly could be our Andrew Miller. He could come in during any late inning where there's trouble, put out the fire, and let Kimbrel vulture the Save.

That's not totally unrealistic... is it?

If I'm not mistaken, Farrell did say that Kelly was now the predominant 8th inning guy, but that he would not use Kelly two days in a row. I don't know the reason for that.

I, OTOH, did not notice that, because I am not strange.
