The time for that type of gamble is back in March. Right now Pounder is far, far more likely to be a problem than a solution. ...

Should desperate dave invest in a reliever this off season like wade Davis?

Melanson got 62 for 4 years. A deal similar to that should get Davis.

It would solve our 8th inning troubles and we would not be dependent on smith or Thornburg.

Don't see them going that high with Kimbrel on the roster, and a bigger need at 1B.

No, he should not. That is too much to pay for a reliever.

I doubt we sign any RP'ers beyond the Boyer types.

Maybe I'm being too hopeful with pitchers returning from injuries.

We could be deeper than this year:

Closer: Kimbrel

RP2: Smith

RP3: Thornburg

RP4: Kelly

RP5: Barnes

RP6:Workman

RP7: Hembree (out of options)

RP8: R Ross

RP9: Wright (if Price is starting)

RP10: R Scott

RP11: B Taylor

RP12: A Maddox

RP13: K Martin

Others: Johnson, Beeks, Velazquez, Cosart, Haley, Elias, Owens, Poyner

Moreland with a relief inning pitched last night! No runs.

Could be the start of a new career path for him.

I always get a kick out of position players pitching in relief. They usually do a pretty decent job, all things considered.

Maybe some minor tweaks and adding a much depth as reasonably possible, but I don't think the BP is an area of need for next year.

I am a huge Maddox fan when he is throwing in control. Love the delivery and the late movement he gets on the heater.

In my perfect world we sign wade Davis and ransom Kimbrel to the nationals for turner, Robles and fedde.

I could see Maddox breaking ST'ing with the big club, even though I have him listed 12th. I think we could be very deep next year, assuming better pen health than 2017.

Fly ball pitchers don't usually do well at Fenway.

The bombs he gave up would have been out of any park. Fenway hasn't screwed him over yet.

I think we could see some relief pitchers move on this offseason as desperate dave has to come up with a hitter and possibly another starter. (Depending on price's elbow)

I doubt we trade Kimbrel, Smith, Thornburg or Kelly, and nobody else is going to bring us the hitter (or SP'er) we need.

I could see us trading out-of-options Hembree for a prospect and keeping all the rest.

With Wright as a starter in Price's slot, and Hembree traded, our pen looks very good and just deep enough:

Closer: Kimbrel

RP2: Smith

RP3: Thornburg

RP4: Kelly

RP5: Workman

RP6: Ross

RP7: Barnes

AAA: Scott, Maddox, Taylor, Martin and converted starters- Johnson, Beeks, Velazquez, Cosart & Haley

Not sure Wright will ever be the pitcher he was two years ago.

Desperate dave got burned very badly at third base this year thinking a veteran could get back to what he was before. I doubt he makes that mistake again.

I imagine a relief pitcher or two as part of a package will need to go to get a quality starter or hitter.

2017 Pen Numbers (before tonight)

IP RP'er WHIP/K-BB

60 Barnes 1.20/2.4

57 Kimbrel 0.67/9.6

54 Hembree 1.46/4.0

44 J Kelly 1.28/1.7

37 F Abad 1.14/2.4

31 R Scott 1.03/2.1

29 Workman 1.06/4.6

29 B Boyer 1.70/2.1

17 B Taylor 1.67/2.0

12 A Reed 0.81/5.0

9.0 R Ross 1.89/1.8

26 IP Others

No Abad or Boyer next year. That's 54+ IP to be replaced. If we trade Hembree, we'll have over 110 IP to replace. Carson Smith and Thornburg seem to be the guys we'd expect to take those innings, but we'll also have Robbie Ross, a full season from Workman and some young bucks trying to make a mark. If healthy, I like how our pen looks next year.

DD didn't even get a 5th starter to replace Price this year.

I think he signs a couple Fister types and puts all his eggs in a clean-up hitting 1Bman.

Holy s*** look at Kimbrel's WHIP.

0.667 Kimbrel 2017

0.565 Uehara 2013

0.771 Papelbon 2007

0.940 Foulke 2004

Other than Kimbrel's 2012 season at 0.654 and a couple of better seasons by Foulke, all of these closers had their best WHIP seasons in our championship seasons.

Robbie Ross is scheduled for back surgery so one would hope he can fully recover and be back next year.

Maybe it's too much to hope for.

Is there any reason they are waiting to do the surgery?

I think I read today that he had successful back surgery today or yesterday?

Also read that there is a decent chance that Price will pitch out of the pen if he returns.

Returns this year, right?

Hembree has good stuff except between the ears. He gets himself into trouble trying to nibble and then being forced to come right over. Don't know if he can help much in the playoffs. Abad also looked weak tonight.

Probably couldn't pitch back to back games. Useless on a postseason roster.

If Price is healthy and can only pitch out of the pen he has to be on the post season roster. With more days off during the playoffs the bullpen plays a bigger role. (See KC and Cleveland the last few years). Price is better then any other lefty we have in the pen. He played that role for TB in his rookie season.
