Beni is a 0 for 5 games now. Have the opposing teams found something to exploit? I don't know but a cleanup hitter that doesn't get a hit in 5 games is not where the team wants to be.

he never was and never will be a cleanup hitter in the traditional sense. he will hit. i'm pretty sure of that but he is not by any means the second coming of Freddie Lynn.

Here are some interesting stats:

With a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs, we get the runner home 47% of the time. The league average is 53%.

With a runner on 2nd and 0 outs, we advance the runner 53% of the time. The league average is 62%.

In other words, we have not done a good job of situational hitting. Good situational hitting would certainly improve the run scoring.

Beni is the worst on the team in those situations. He is 3 for 10 in getting a runner home from 3rd and 1 for 5 in advancing a runner from 2nd with no outs. Is he (and the rest of the lineup) trying to do too much in those situations?

And since this is all random, we will turn this around and do better at this? If not, we are staring at an enigma?

Considering Betts and Benni has drove in the most and 2nd most runs on a team challenged to score runs, yeah without them we're 5-7 games below .500

They also tied for 1st with runs scored.

I wondered about whether Beni's early success has resulted in him trying to do too much. When the team had the bases loaded with one out I believe, Beni appeared to be swinging for the fences and so did Moreland. Maybe a fly ball would have brought a run in. It could be he just has to adjust his thinking as he has excellent form now.

I wonder if maybe the expectations placed on him are too high for such a young kid with virtually no major league experience. He has risen to the occasion overall so far, recent slump notwithstanding, but he may be trying to do too much. He's the clean up hitter in a line up that's been scuffling. That's a big weight to carry.

He did draw 3 walks in these 5 games and the strikeouts are not crazy either - we'll see how he rides through this - but again, it seems like something a ball finding a gap can fix.

I think that the expectations started getting out of hand. There have been comparisons to Yaz, Boggs, Lynn etc. That is jumping the gun a bit and it has created very high expectations.

He seems to be handling the pressure pretty well.

I agree with you about the 'luck' factor, or lack thereof, when it comes to our offense. They are getting on base at a good clip, which is still the bottom line in scoring runs. The runs will come.

Agreed. I always hate seeing articles like these, or ones that anoint a player as ROY before the season has even started.

Beni has done very well, but we have to remember he's still very young and very inexperienced at the major league level.

He's fine, probably the least of our problems.
