Great to start off with a win! Benintendi got on top of and mashed a big time (98 mph) heater. Porcello picked up right where he left off last year.

And Moreland did nothing to distinguish himself. In fact, he failed on two opportunities to scoop short hop throws. He has to do better than that in this town or he will get the treatment big time. Even if he starts to hit. For all the "defense first" at catcher, how do you feel about a GG 1st baseman that does not handle short hop throws?

Pablow was responsible for one of the bad throws. Otherwise he looked pretty good today. On his bad throw he rushed it and was not set. He had plenty of time. He just flubbed it. Oh well. Not bad for a guy who could not tie his own shoes last season.

I'd be shocked if this is not Bennie's Beantown at the end of this season. That kid can hit. Of course I have been saying this since they drafted him.

Benintendi has been one of the best hitters on every team that he has ever played for.

Leon looked pretty good from my couch today. A couple of hits and a pea to second.

JBJ looked like an All-Star to me.

one miscue by Sandoval but he just looks like someone who really has something to prove.

Two tough chances for Mooreland - would have been nice to see him dig them out but even the best have trouble with that play.

Porcello - got tired a little at the end but he looks so much in command. Tough - very tough - I hate the fact that he had to be responsible for 2 of those 3 runs.

I hope that I can get get comfortable eventually with the bullpen. Would like to see one guy out there who could conjure up a clean inning or two.

He was charged with all 3 runs.

I know that he was charged with all 3. That is my point! Barnes didn't help him out very much. If Barnes had pitched a clean inning and finished the job, Porcello's line would have looked a hell of a lot better . As in 1 run not 3. I just have to be clearer.

Okay. I took it the wrong way.

Porcello pitched very well. I know he was on a roill, but I wondered why they didn't yank him after 6- being his first game. (I thought it before the first guy got a hit.)

Not me . I was pleased to see him come back in the 7th. I couldn't see any reason to yank him early. When he came up and in to whats his name the Pittsburgh catcher the second time, it looked like he was tiring. Didn't look the same. I'm not an early hook kind of guy - particularly with things still being sorted out in the bullpen. I hope that the established pattern of relief pitcher usage in the 7th and 8th to get to your closer doesn't haunt us. I hope Farrell doesn't lock himself into a pattern just because it seems like the thing to do.

It might be the thing to do if you have the guys to do it!

I don't care about Porcello's ERA. I care about the win.

Not me - I could care less about whether that team wins or loses. lol

If you care about winning and losing as much as I do, I wonder if you felt the way i did when Barnes was struggling to get the job done.

I'm not an early hook guy either, but this was opening day.

I'm not being critical of JF. I totally understand his call. I'm just saying, I said to myself, I'd yank him after 6. We have today off and an extra guy in the pen.

I think quick hooks early in the season are helpful to long term health of starters. Once it gets to be May, they should just let it rip.

So, I'm very pleased with my first impression of this team. The offense looked good, and will get better. Gerrit Cole is a good pitcher when he's on, and until the 5th, he looked like he was on, so I'm not too upset that we didn't light him up or anything. Porcello looked good, but I think he should've come out before the start of the 7th. I have no idea what his pitch count was through 6, but nonetheless, I felt like being up 5-0, it would have been a good time to see what our bullpen had to offer. Also, I watched the pregame intros live, before I went to my baseball practice, and the standing O that the Fenway Faithful gave to Sale when he was introduced was eye-opening. As long as he pitches well tomorrow, my opinion of him has taken a complete 180. You could even say that I'm sold.

Cole just lost it after fielding the Leon bunt. It looked like he was upset with the bench for having the shift on or something. IDK. Sometimes you just need to rattle the pitcher a bit to get him off his game.

I thought the same thing. He looked rattled after that play.

Merloni kept harping on it afterwards during the radio broadcast.

HoF starting his season very well.

as for Cole, the pitching coach came for a mound visit after that bunt for that very reason. if he still failed because of the bunt then he is chocker / not clutch.

I get that Leon's bunt got to Cole a bit but the that high heater to Benintendi was the one that drove his chin to his draws (drawers -there I go again)
