Right now, to me, this is a 2-man race, with Altuve leading Betts, and Trout a very distant 3rd. Anybody see a sleeper? If this were the old Suffolk Downs, I would have them this way:

Altuce at 5-2

Betts at 9-2

Trout at 6-1

Big Papi at 12-1 (and maybe slipping a little as he wears down)

At the moment, I see Altuve as MVP, and a tight race between Hamels, Porcello, and Aaron Sanchez for Cy Young.

Betts

Altuve

Donaldson

Machado

Trout

As of now... Don't like to give pitchers the MVP. They have the CY for that.. Don't forget Fulmer he's sneaking up there.

bWAR says:

Trout 7.2

Altuve 6.9

Betts 6.6

Donaldson 6.4

Machado 5.6

Mookie's WAR jumped by .5 yesterday.

fWAR also has Kris Bryant and Corey Seager listed among the top 5.

All of the top MVP candidates are on playoff contending teams, except for Trout. That leads to the age old debate about whether a player like Trout, whose team isn't a playoff contender, can be an MVP. I say yes, but I could certainly see the other side of the argument. After all, if the Angels didn't have Trout, would it really matter?

I have no problem giving a pitcher the MVP if he is deserving. In my opinion, the MVP isn't necessarily the best player on a team. It's the player that the team could least afford to lose. In contrast, the Cy should go to the best pitcher. I think there's a difference.

Perhaps it would be fitting to have a comparable award for position players - the best overall position player from each league.

I'd swap Trout with Donaldson.
