Not lately.

July 9 - pitched.

July 10-14 - off.

July 15 - pitched (14 pitches)

July 16 - pitched (7 pitches)

July 17-18 - off.

So from July 10 to July 18, 9 days, he threw 21 pitches.

Because of the AS break. He was on track for almost 80 appearances. Ridiculous.

Fool's gold.

He has done nothing at the mlb level this season to disprove your statement. My hope was/is that he could be dynamic for 1 inning.

I believe he can be a decent reliever. He just needs to produce consistently. I'd be scared of his high wire act in high leverage situations.

Agreed. It would def cause many a sox fan to have gnawed fingernails. It made more sense to try second half last year when we were already cooked than to try it now when we are in playoff contention. Right now picking up Ziegler may have been the best move by DD yet.....

What is everyone expecting from Pom tonight?

6+ with 3 earned would keep my yap shut.

I'd take that.

It's interesting that he will face an NL team in Fenway for his first turn in the rotation. I imagine that the Giants have seen his stuff so they won't have any surprises.

They have seen him 3 times. Each time out they've hit worse against him than previously. He had a great performance the third time he pitched against him.

For reference, he faced them twice in one week pitching 13 innings and only giving up 2 runs with a WHIP under 1.00.

80? Wow! It was almost a certainty that he would break down. He has rarely exceeded 50 innings in a season, even when he was younger.

It's not true. He was on pace for about 65 innings this year. He threw 74 in 2013 and 64 in 2014.

He was on pace for 68 games. I overstated when I said approximately 80. It was more like approximately 70.

I was thinking we were at around 83 games in, but we're at 91 games in.

The point still stands that you can't expect that kind of overuse out of a 41 year old guy with injury concerns and diminished "stuff." Why have him lead your team in appearances? It makes little sense to me.

How effective would he be in the postseason if he pitched 70 innings in the regular season?

Koji, Kimbrel, Tazawa and Barnes would all have about the same usage #s if Kimbrel and Tazawa weren't on the DL.

You know how you win a game when your offense only has 4 hits? Your SP acts like an ace and shuts out the other team.

Ha. I reallly like you Slasher. :)

I personally wanted Kelly killed or not on the team.

I wanted Kelly to be given another shot in our rotation after the way he finished last season.

That is still too much for him. He has never been a workhorse. That was not going to change at age 41.

I would absolutely take that. I honestly don't know what to expect, but I'm excited about his start.

On a side note, I've always liked Peavy. It was nice to see him pitch last night.

He was definitely a workhorse in 2013. 88 total innings including the postseason.

And his numbers showed it the following year.

That was a career season for him. He hasn't come close to that before or since and now he is 41.

He was overworked in 2013, admittedly, but there was a World Series on the line, so pretty hard to knock it.

I don't knock the 2013 workload. I'm just saying that all those miles have added up and his arm needs to be managed better.

Using him a 4-0 game after using him in 2 of the last 3 games is not wise usage, and we may have paid the price.

Really? He pitched last night, Tuesday, but was off Monday and the day before that, Sunday. He pitched Friday and Saturday, but that was after six days of rest, including the all-star break. Since July 9, he has thrown a total of 28 pitches not including warm-ups. From June 28 to the present, Uehara has pitched in 9 games, and the Sox won all 9.

Before arriving in Boston, Uehara had a total of 14 saves. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, he had 21, 26, and 25 saves. which tells me the Sox have gotten good value out of him. I always thought that what made Uehara so great in 2013 was that splitter, which combined beautifully with his so-so fastball and excellent control. This year the splitter hasn't looked so great, which I think has forced Uehara to throw more fastballs, which then allows opposing hitters to look for fastballs and not worry about splitters.

Then I guess that he needed the work hence why JF pitched him in 3 of the Sox last 4 games, last night being the 3rd.

i don't think anyone has ever questioned his acquisition or the value that he has provided which makes it even more critical not to abuse his 41 year old arm.
