I think it's pretty cool that Epstein gave Manny a job in the Cubs organization.

Makes you wonder just how despicably Theo viewed Manny.

I don't believe any of the leaked stuff by the sox FO when it comes to a player they are trying to get gone.

And they tried getting rid of the $20MM every year. Thankfully for us fans they didn't succeed until 2008.

Okay. If it happened or didn't happen, it doesn't change what he did in Boston.

My recollection is that manny had asked for a trade, got booed for it and then was benched for a couple of days up to the trading deadline, and then he had a change of heart on the Trading Deadline date.

Manny was (is) a numbskull. One of the greatest right handed hitters of all time but a true numbskull. I was glad that his bat was in our lineup but I was never a fan of the antics that came along with him.

Manny kept me entertained, both with his hitting talent and his on field antics. Not a fan of his off field antics, particularly the incident with the clubhouse attendant and his supposed quitting on his team. It's a shame that his legacy will be tainted by things like that. The showboating, the infamous cutoff, the trip to the monster, etc. - I loved that stuff.

As much of a knucklehead that Manny was, he worked hard at his hitting craft. In Spring Training I often witnessed that he would take an extra half an hour of bp in the cages in LF after taking his regular rotation on the field, and then he would play and always get 3 ABs even in week 1 of ST. He worked at it very hard. He was a true savant.

A hitting savant. He was so good at what he wanted to do that you really could for the most part ignore all of the horseshit that he brought along.

Don't let the Boston media fool you. That clubhouse attendant deserved what he got.

I'm not sure about that, but Youkilis deserved what he got that time Manny set him straight.

The funniest incidents I remember about Manny was that I think he used the excuse "My grandmother died" to show up late to spring training about 5 or 6 times.

I mean, how many grandmothers can anybody have?!?!

I think I responded to this even then, but I worked in Bartow for 2 yrs while in college. One night, I got a call from one of the day workers, a lady with a tearful voice saying her grandmother had died and she wouldn't be in in the morning. Ten minutes later my super walked into the office and I told him the sad news. He chuckled a little and then apologized, "Clarky, she got you, newby! She's worked here for over 10 years and my guess is her grandmother has passed away about 13 times."
