Why is Hanigan still here exactly?

Christian Vasquez needs to play every day in Pawtucket, Blake Swihart is on the DL and catching depth is pretty important, as we've obviously witnessed this season.

Because catching depth is important, catcher is probably the one position most likely to sustain injuries over the course of the season. Also there's no particular reason Hanigan can't bounce back in the second half.

If you get rid of Hanigan and take an injury to Leon or Vazquez, you're left with Dan Butler as your backup catcher, and while I've always felt that Butler deserved a chance to see if he could break into the big leagues as a backup catcher with a bit of stick off the bench, the middle of a pennant race is not the right time.

^^Winner. IMO, the importance of a veteran, defensive minded back up catcher is often understated.

It kind of diminishes in the presence of two young defensive minded backup catchers, but I won't dismiss the mentorship factor.

Under current rules, a player must have 3.1 plate appearances (PA) per team game (for a total of 502 over the current 162-game season) to qualify for the batting title. However, if a player's lead in AVG is sufficiently large that enough hitless at bats can be added to reach this requirement and the player still would have the highest batting average, he wins the title.

As of Now Sandy has 152 AB's with a .375 BA, so even if he were to get 3 AB's in each of the remaining games this season, it is unlikely that he would qualify for the batting title.

He's got 171 PAs. Let's say everything goes right. They move Leon up in the order, he plays every game and gets 159 PAs in the 37 remaining games. That gives him

330 PAs total. Let's say he walks just 10 times and bats .400 over the rest of the season. He'd end up going 60 for 150 and total 117 hits in 302 ABs. His final BA would be .387, Now add zero for 200 to get him to 502 PAs, he'd be 117/502 for a .203 BA.

Not even close.
