Really? except for his poor numbers vs. LHP pretty much his entire professional career except for 1 month last year?

I like Shaw, but he does not look good vs. LHP.

He is not going to get platooned. Holt will lose ABs to Young, not Shaw. His minor league stats are meaningless. He has far outperformed his minor league stats in every regard.

Spot on. I'm all in on Shaw.

Yes, but you miss my point. Shaw hasn't been hitting LHP...I used his minor league numbers to back up the fact that this is a long term trend. He didn't do it in the minors and he isn't doing it now either. Maybe he won't get platooned, maybe he shouldn't....but it doesn't change the fact that Shaw is a poor hitter vs. LHP.

I'd say this game has gone perfect for the Boston Red Sox, nice to see the offense get it's licks in.

I thought Shaw had good #'s against lefties last year? Maybe it was just one year.... but didn't Young really just have last year as really good against lefties?

I guess the Red Sox saw that they were leading in runs scored but last in HRs in the AL and said "we should do something about that". The last three days they have been knocking it out of the park all over the place. I just watched the video of that Hanley bomb, I'm pretty sure it punched a hole in the ozone layer.

It's too early in his career to say how good or bad Shaw is against either lefties or righties. Last year, in 85 plate appearances against lefties, he batted .329 with 6 home runs and a .975 OPS. Against righties in 163 PA, he batted .236 with just 7 HR and a .723 OPS. Right now, you play him against lefties and righties to give him a body or work against each to see what he really is.

None of his minor league stats indicate that he would perform this well at the MLB level, so they are as a whole worthless as indicators of anything with regard to his performance. He has obviously taken his game to a new level and his minor league numbers can be thrown out the window. He was excellent against LHP last year in a larger sample size than his 2016 LHP splits. He is the better hitter against LHP than Holt. He just doesn't give an inch at the plate. he hangs in better than Holt and takes pitches the other way very well. He has the superior approach which I believe will yield the superior results. Another thing to be considered is that only David Ortiz has been a more productive hitter than Shaw in this early 2016, and I don't see the wisdom in platooning your second best hitter. If he cools off and if he really struggles against LHP, he might sit against LHP from time to time, but right now, Holt will lose most of the ABs that Young gets. Edited by a700hitter

Keep thinking this guy comes back down to earth......... loving he hasn't yet.....

He surely has out performed his AAA stats........I just don't think he knows that, or cares or even believes that.........

Perfectly happy with the work O'Sullivan did today. if O'Sullivan had a "You Have One Job" speech given to him before he pitched tonight that one job would be -- get through 6 innings. Nothing else was as important as consuming at least 2/3 of the game himself. Mission accomplished. And the bats picked him up which was good. but for a replacement starter I'll take the job O'Sullivan did 11 times out of 10.

No. Just 2 games this trip. I will be back for the Saturday and Sunday games against the Guardians on 5/21 and 5/22.

Well, as I hoped, the Sox snapped their four-year May 9th losing streak. Now all that's left is to sweep these guys right out of Fenway Park.

Win!

Zowie, Youk! Another touchdown and two field goals ... I am loving this! :o) I cannot post while at work, but I can keep my tablet on as I toil around. Volume low. But the bats are incredible!

Totally agree. If JF had pulled him a few batters early, his outing would have looked even better. He had a shut out through 5. ... I guess he earned the opportunity to work through the 6th. Not bad for a "journeyman" ...

Does he take Owens spot next time around or does Eduardo make it back by then?

I think you take it slow with Eddie. It's more important that he be there and viable in September than that he rush back. And I think that since he was perfectly adequate tonight, I'd be fine with it if Farrell was of the opinion that he'd earned another start. He looked like he should be a perfectly reasonable 5th starter type -- a guy who makes mistakes but hangs in there and eats innings. That's all you ask of the last guy in the rotation.

Perfectly adequate? A WHIP of 2 is adequate? Really? Cmon now. ERod needs to not only get his velo up, but he also needs to show progression in year 2. It took a bunch of starts for our kid to adjust back to the adjustments the league made, and I assume the same will occur with your kid

Agree, Dojii. I was thinking he had "earned" the next start. The thought of Eduardo just jumped in, even though from what I've read he seems to need more work in Pawtucket. I am personally just as happy as can be to have him work up to whatever his need is without undo pressure. Heal well and heal properly. I had no idea his injury was this complex but sobeit.

Wow, so before the Braves series, it was 4-6... That's surprising.

Good to know we are heading in the right direction! I am sure you recall the seasons we played well against top competition just to lose to the lesser teams. We did what we should with the Braves and 'Stros ... hopefully Porcello pitches well tonight and we give him good support so that we can send the A's back with poor memories of this trip.

you're an idiot, seriously. Using WHIP over a single start, really? And on a replacement starter no less. WHIP is only useful over a reasonable sample size, which does not, I hasten to point out, mean one freaking start.

The number one job of a replacement starter is to get through innings. O'Sullivan didn't look pretty, but he did his job. I'd be fine with giving him another go.
