Since I posted about the worst.. Figured I'd also make one about the best. I'm not talking about draft picks, but just free agent/trades

For me, this is an easy one, David Ortiz. Signed out FA after being released and turned into an elite hitter, 3 time world series champ and future hall of famer

Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Derek Lowe/Varitek and Schilling are honorable mentions.

Speaking of Ortiz, that was quite a show last night. A towering bomb to turn the game around off a lefty who had never given up a home run to a LH hitter before. Then an RBI single against the shift. Then he tries to bunt his last time up. And he seemed to be grinning and goofing around throughout the whole game.

Best...

The deal away of the century with Beckett/AdGon/Crawford/Punto allowed their team to reset.

The Slocum deal literally gave you a good pitcher and your second best C of all time, for a s***** reliever

The Schilling deal turned into gold.

The Pedro deal was ridiculous too

I agree, getting Papi was the best move.

The best trade was Varitek and Lowe for Slocumb.[/QUOTE]

This Seattle fan was upset the day the Mariners traded Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb at the July 1997 deadline.

However, I was not disappointed about that trade of Varitek and Lowe, two apparently stalled prospects in the Seattle farm system.

I was upset that the Mariners on that day traded Jose Cruz Jr., who entered that 1997 season as Baseball America's 12th-ranked prospect, to Toronto for relievers Paul Spoljaric and Mike Timlin (the latter eventually pitched for two World Series champions with the Red Sox).

Trivia question: The Varitek/Lowe trade marked the second time in two years that the Red Sox and Mariners consummated a deal at the trade deadline. Of those trades, what player produced for the most WAR for his new team?

Seattle fan? Is this Hill?

I am having a hard time recalling what the other trade was, so I'm guessing that it was not a trade in the Red Sox favor, which in turn leads me to guess that the player the Sox traded to the Mariners is the answer to your trivia question.

I could look it up, but I won't cheat.
