Pretty soon the "here comes Pablo thread" might have to be started. 2 hits - 5 or 6 clean innings - no injuries - I'll be all over that one. Come on Panda! - Shaw won't get left out, he'll be in left field.

Totally.

Hanley looking at least serviceable is a huge win. HUGE. Considering what a s*** show it could be if he is isn't able to hold down the position, this is good news and I'm very happy to be wrong about him being able to play the position.

He is not going to win any Gold Gloves, but he should be adequate. Ortiz is probably the better fielder at 1B, and he can catch pop ups. I have always felt that Papi's ability at 1B was underrated.

Papi could play a game or two at first base even at his age, and he probably will during interleague games, but a younger man is required to carry the majority of play at that position as you know. Papi's got the skills to play a decent 1B, but his lower body can't stand the strain of doing it regularly anymore..

I wasn't suggesting that Ortiz play regularly or even semi-regularly in the field. We need his bat in the lineup and can't risk his health. I was using Ortiz's 1B ability as an illustration of what we can expect from Hanley, but Hanley has problems with pop-ups.

Yes, I'm not surprised by a problem with popups, it probably has to do with seeing the ball coming off the bat from a new position, which changes the eye angle and makes it more difficult to read a play off the bat. it's a problem I expect to see him learn how to cope with eventually.

He never learned how to cope with fly balls, but maybe he will develop some proficiency.

"Ramirez confident

First baseman Hanley Ramirez continues to flash his much improved glove. At one point aganst the Cardinals, Ramirez leaped high to spear a line drive. He also stretched far to corral a tough throw from second baseman Brock Holt, who had made a sensational stop in the hole.

Ramirez said that his confidence is growing and that compared to last year, when he was learning how to become a left fielder, he is in a much better spot.

“No doubt, I think every day is getting better and better and better and better,” Ramirez said. “I feel like everybody is looking at me like, ‘He’s going to make a great play right here.’ That’s what I expect from myself: Get ready, because it’s right here; get ready to dive right here, catch everything.”"

CHOO CHOO.. ALL ABOARD!!!!

I still expect to see some high level buffoonery from H-Ram.

But again...... I'm really looking forward to seeing his bat in the lineup.

This is the thing. If he can continue to play serviceable D at 1st than his bat will remain in the lineup. Barring injury, of course.

I'm not eating any crow here. I don't believe that I ever said that he could not play 1st base adequately, I just have had doubts that he would make the effort.

I hope that he sustains his current level of interest. It would be wonderful to see him have a huge year.

How about a side dish of boiled owl with that crow you tough old ....

Whe n you going to start the "let's go Pablo thread?"

I gotta know. Is this threads title a play off an Aliens cut scene?

And if so, do you remember all the screaming and horror that was going on at the end of that scene?

Short answer is no!

If Hanley works at the footwork of 1b, he should be fine defensively. I just wonder if his bat can return and play at a solid level for a 1b

If not, Sam Travis looks like a very interesting prospect.

The last year in the minors that Travis Shaw played third base more than first base was 2011. And between 2012 and 2014 he played ten times as many games at first as at third. This team was grooming Travis Shaw for a first base assignment from day 1. They only started seriously trying to stretch Shaw back out as a third baseman last year, and last year was still an even split between first an d third in the minors.

The team saw Shaw as a first baseman until the very second that Pablo Sandoval started to implode. Opening Shaw back up to third base is a literal desperation move invented mostly in the second half of last year. Anything else someone tells you is revisionist history.

I don't know if it is a desperation move, but rather a situation that Shaw has forced with his hot bat. I view it as a luxury if Shaw can play 3B and continue his hot hitting.

Well I don't know how I accomplished that but half of that post should have been in another thread. I need to start paying a little more attention :/ Anyway, I was trying to say in this post, before I mangled it, that Sam Travis is a fine backup option if Hanley doesn't hit.

When the thread started, I never thought that anyone would suggest the possibility of Hanley not hitting. Looks as though we have backup plans for everything.
