Owens has shown no sign of regression in his fundamentals or peripherals, I don't know what Jung is talking about. the worst thing that happened to Owens so far is he got hit around a bit as a rookie. if you want to tell me that's the end of the world I'm gonna point out the dozens of ACE level starters who got shelled worse than Owens in year 1. Not saying Owens is an ace of course, but if you think the book is closed on the kid, you're putting the cart so far in front of the horse that they're on different continents.

I'm sorry if you think it's the end of the world when the jury is out on a FREAKING ROOKIE, then you seriously need some kind of chill pill.

Regression in MLB terms is considered when the team moves you up the ladder and you go backwards! Owens was recording 1.78, 2.94 and 2.60 ERA's in Portland over two seasons and those jumped to 4.03 and 3.46 in Pawtucket. MLB calls that regression. You can talk about peripherals forever when opening day comes it will be Wright in the 5 hole for the Sox and not Owens. That is all you really have to know. Even given that the Sox want desperately for it to be Owens, it will be Wright.

Then why wibble about his Pawtucket stats? Again, Owens' MLB peripherals last year were NOT. THAT. BAD. FOR. A. ROOKIE. 2 strikeouts per walk, less than a walk every 2 innings, (barely) less than 1 hit allowed an inning, and an acceptable WHIP, if one with room for improvement. Not bad. Not great, but not bad. The worst he was last year is a little prone to giving up the gopher ball, but with incremental improvements in other areas that can become an acceptable flaw.

In fact after your Eeyoring about Owens I was very pleasantly surprised when I went to the stat sheet to get some intel of my own. He looks like he doesn't have to improve that much to be a stalwart in the lower middle of a rotation. That's about what I'd expect giving his profile of stuff.

Is this discussion built primarily about who might be at the very best our number 4 guy in the rotation actually more likely our number 5? The bigger picture here seems to be that once we get past Price our starting rotation might have some issues. It wouldn't surprise me at all if we see a deal done sooner as opposed to later.

Sources are saying that ERod should be throwing a bp sesh in the next few days. Hope he can get in a few innings in ST. He's definitely starting in AAA though.

What do TS members think about Lincecum? I think that he is still out there. He had 3 or 4 plus pitches before he started losing velocity. He is a guy that could still pitch well without the big heater.

Kyle Lohse is still out there. And there are a few dumpster dive opportunities still out there.

Well for one thing I think Boston would love Timmy....guts out his rear end and pitches his heart out. He is definitely a guy that has learned how to pitch. But man when he threw he had one of those motions that posed all of his body weight against his arm and he buggy whipped that arm. You were just waiting for that arm to follow the ball to home plate. If he is not asking for the world in money.....I would be willing to take a flyer on Timmy. Again....he would have one thing going for him that the ever PR conscience Sox should realize...Fenway would love him.

he'd be worth a flier, but I wouldn't sink any serious resources into acquiring him. He's unlikely to be that much better than the depth options we already have.

I like all dumpster dive opportunities as long as they aren't guaranteed a spot. He could be a good RP.

A lot of teams are suppossed to attend his showcase, meaning there's a lot of interest. He's probably going to get a guaranteed deal somewhere.

Thing is I do not believe under any circumstances will we see more than a flier taken for another pitcher here. So if they do anything at all it is who do they take that flier on.

Josh Johnson should be cheap, but will he ever pitch again?

I thought he wouldn't be ready until next year?
