Red Sox To Sign Yoan Moncada

By Steve Adams [February 23, 2015 at 8:11am CST]

The Red Sox and Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada have reached agreement on a signing bonus in the range of $30MM, reports MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez (via Twitter). Of course, by signing Moncada to a bonus in the $30MM range, the Red Sox will also be paying a luxury tax worth roughly that same amount, making this in total an approximately $60MM expenditure for Boston.

Moncada, a 19-year-old switch-hitting infielder, is the most sought-after international prospect in recent history. Said to be a true five-tool talent, scouts have likened his upside to that of Robinson Cano and Chase Utley (in his prime). Over the past several months, the Red Sox have been one of the primary teams connected to Moncada, although many believed the Yankees and Dodgers to be in a better position to land him, as the Red Sox don’t have a clear long-term need in the infield with Dustin Pedroia at second base and Pablo Sandoval entering the first of a five-year, $95MM contract. (Sandoval, of course, could move over to first base in a few years.) Xander Bogaerts figures to be the long-term answer at shortstop, though the expectation among scouts is that Moncada will end up at second, third or possibly in center field (where countryman Rusney Castillo is currently slotted).

Nice! 30m seems like a steal. Thats a big add to the farm system. Can not believe the Yanks or Dodgers didn't to that.

I've read right field is a reasonable projection for him. 6'0" 210 as a 19 year old makes it very possible he will outgrow the position quickly - but apparently the tools and bat project anywhere

Probably he will end up at CF... Seems like he could be even better than Puig.

Im guessing he will get some time in the low a ball league in Florida to start then if all goes well he probably spends most the season in Portland. I think his eta is 1-3 seasons depending on his progress and the teams needs. But that's just my personal opinion and haven't seen anything anywhere about it.

More importantly, now that the Sox have signed someone the Yankees coveted, let's see how Jacko tries to spin this as a bad move.

Ya I am looking forward to that lol "hes a punk ass kid, we wanted Alvarez all along and fooled everyone into going after Moncada!!"

I had criticized the FO for not signing more international prospects like the Yankees. Apparently the Red Sox had saved some money for an impact player. This seems like a good price-- hopefully he is really only 19, and they can find a spot in the infield for him.

It is a record bounus... So not sure if this is a steal but if this kid turns in something close to Cano as some are saying, yes... It will be a steal to me.

Probably it is a long shot but... If the Kid is "ready" and X goes to Philly for Hammels, I'll be ok with that.

With the $30 million penalty, the bonus turns out to be $60 million. I don't know if - would call that a steal fo a 19 year old. Even if he is the real deal, that is pretty sizeable.

It's a lot of money but seems like he is the best prospect out there and win a bid war against LAD and NYY could mean something.

It's a good signing. Even with the crazy overinflation of Cuban prospects, this seems like a premium one.

Question is whether they will put him in extended spring and then wait and start him in Lowell or something ... or do you go right to Greenville. If he can smash his way through full season ball as a 19 year old, that is plenty to get excited about. If he gets to Portland this year - then that is something to really really crow about. (of course this assumes the age is accurate)

I am pissed off to all hell on this one. The most recent SR I saw on this kid put him as a corner IFer rather than SS. Yankees put him through 3 workouts, presumably to see how he'd fare as a MIF. My guess is they didn't think he'd stick. Regardless, this kid is 19 and possesses a now bat. He has plus power projection and could probably hold his own today if he had to. He is only going to get better. My guess is he is your 3B of the future with Panda moving to 1b after Napoli moves on. I wanted him in NY in the worst way. A total cost of $60 mil would be complete chump change if the sox get the ceiling out of him, which he apparently isn't far away from. And, this isn't your typical FA contract. This is a bonus, meaning the kid isn't even on the 40 man and is controlled like any INTL signee. The sox are probably going to stash him in AA for the season and start him in the bigs when he is fully ready, and THEN they will have 6 years of control. This is a great move for Boston.

Interesting. I wonder where he will start off in our system, and how many years he is away from the majors.

Yup. You ask the right questions.

How long is he signed for? $30. mil is a bonus? Okay. What are the Sox paying and for how long?

He is 19. Even if he is Mike Trout worthy, he is probably two years away.

Hope the Kid learns English.

I like the Good Doctor but I am very interested to see how this kid fits into the chart!!!

This move is like "buying" a top prospect. Some of the prospect guys have ranked him as a top 5-10 prospect. Is it worth it? Who knows, but if he prospers, better here than New York.

They have the same length of control as they would have had if they drafted him i believe.

A700 it appears like a steal because all the talk so far had been in the 40-50m range(80-100m with penalty).

Are you sniffing glue again?

You are "ok" with sending a starting MLB SS to another team and replacing him with a 19 year old that has never played full season ball and has never lived in the U.S.????

Eye corumba!

As I said it is loooong shot... But if the kid is the real deal (very likely) and ready, and they trade XB for Hammels I won't complain although I would have signed a FA. What is interesting is that this signing suddenly happened after a couple of weeks where the Hammels talks were everywhere.

Dude lives in a glue factory. Most of what I have read has said he's a 2B that can play 3B. SS was almost always mentioned as a long shot.

Good vibes, even from Jacko.

It probably killed him inside to write that post, so props to him being real and not resorting to the chart.

Boston offer was 31.5M. Yankees offered 25M and were willing to go to 27M if needed. LOL the all mighty Yanks lost out on him for 4.5M. I absolutely stunned. No word on where the Dodgers came in at yet.
