8:55am: The Tigers and Red Sox have agreed to a deal that will send outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to Detroit in return for starter Rick Porcello, C.J. Nitkowski of FOX Sports and MLB Network reports on Twitter. Indeed, Detroit is closing in on a deal involving Cespedes and Porcello as well as another trade, Jon Morosi of FOX Sports tweets. Detroit will also receive minor league pitching in the deal, per another Morosi tweet.

We were never going to get a stud like Cueto, so Porcello is about right. He's not an ace though. We need to trade for James Shields.

Was he?

Honestly, it's hard to tell. You live here too. The Media says so many things that are not necessarily true.

I had heard that he refused to play RF when he got here. Just yesterday I was reading that Farrell had said that that was not the case. That Cespedes had merely said that he had only played LF and CF in the majors.

Anything for a headline, I guess.

Still, he did say that he will go to free agency and did not want to discuss an extension.

That says to me that he does not want to be here so F him.

Also, he is overrated except for his power which all teams need.

I want no part of shields

Well, if we want a #1 type, out there are only 2 FA, Shields and Scherzer. On the other hand if you want trade for a number one you will most likely give up a haul of prospects. We still need two arms to get this thing done. I'm not sure how they are going approach to address this.

What do you prefer?

I say that the Sox will grab a #1 and call it a day.

I can't see the Sox spending 5/120 or so to get Shields but anything can happen.

I'm not in love with Hamels but I can see the Sox going that route. Hopefully without trading Betts, Swilhart and maybe Owens.

To me, it means he just wants to be paid as much as possible. Can't blame him for that.

and Bogaerts

and Bogaerts

Well, if we aren't giving up neither of them, not sure what the Phillies will want from us to trade Hamels.

I think it would be hilarious to see a Hamels for Bogaerts trade, followed by a Stephen Drew signing.

No please.

Hanley could play SS and Holt as back up.

I would be livid lol

Marrero has a decent glove and could probably hit better than Drew at this point.

No, Hanley can't play SS. If he could, Cespedes would still be playing LF for the BoSox.

The reason I suggest trading Bogaerts is that the Red Sox have stocked up on a brick ton of groundball hitters today.

Getting an elite defensive shortstop in there would probably help significantly with run prevention. I wonder if the Tigers would sell low on Iggy?

The impact of Bogaert's defensive shortcomings will be minimized by having two very high-quality defenders to either side of his position. Not to mention that Miley and Masterson are also pretty decent at striking hitters out. That's the thing i didn't like about Porcello.

Yes, Bogaerts will have good guys on either side, but he is still gonna be the SS and you cannot shield that. Remember man, I've been watching a statue at SS for 2 decades. You cannot avoid it. Thing is, thought, Porcello is a stop gap. You don't change org philosophy and deal away a potential franchise SS because of one pitcher for one season

One pitcher for one season? Ben has just added three groundball pitchers. Masterson was second in the majors last year in GB%. Miley was 17th. Porcello was 25th. Maybe they go and add #3, Tyson Ross. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a plan here.

Miley is the only one likely to be there for a long time. Masterson is on a pillow contract and Porcello is gonna leave via FA after the season. If this is a change of philosophy, then you cannot have a minus defensive SS or else you'll kill your staff.

Rick Porcello is more than a fair return for Cespedes.

I like the deal a lot. We have now a solid No. 3 man who might morph into a half decent No. 2----but I still want those two pitchers, authentic Nos. 1 and 2. This was a trade that had to be made, and while on the subject of trades glad to hear Masterson only got one year and that he might wind up in the bullpen. His season this was s*** on a roll and he has trouble with left handed hitters which would negate that weakness working out of the pen. OTOH, if he shines in ST and starts the season off well he still might crack the rotation since Buchholz will rupture a tendon opening his bedroom door in early May and be lost to us for the year.;) Just imagine what could have if CB got his head out of his ass, bore down and gave us the kind of season he was having the first months of 2013.

Owens would most likely need to go for Hamels but under no circumstances would I trade Swihart or Betts in any deal. The former is a top flight catcher who can hit and hit with power and can play another position or two and Betts is our new catalyst. Don't laugh but I wouldn't hesitate sending Bogaerts packing in such a trade. I know I'm leaving myself open on this but I really believe this guy is a counterfeit whose value might plummet like Bradley and Middlebrooks did.
