I would be scared to get him. I'm sure he could be a better hitter than bradley, but his stats in cuba were not overwhelming. Cespedes had many more hrs and his average was 20 points higher. Considering that cespedes has turned into a 250- 260 hitter and this guy didnt even hit as well as him cuba, I question what this guy will be able to hit.

I hope someone else outbids the Sox. I realize the temptation of landing a foreign player. I see nothing of real value here.

Is he a great player????? Who knows? He has not played in a baseball game since 2012!!!!! I think he's just another raw player from another country. That's it.

Why waste 50-60 mil and a roster spot on this guy? To be bunk mates with Cespedes??? Screw that.

Go for major league talent or don't bother.

Agreed. Unless this guy is the real deal, look to the major league talent.

His comp is Brett Gardner/Ellsbury. Has this team given up on JBJ ability as a regular CF?
I don't think that he can be viewed as the incumbent CFer in the off season. He will have to win the job back. I would expect someone else to be installed as the starting CFer in 2015 and Bradley would have to catch a break and capitalize on it to win back the job.

Seems like a bust waiting to happen. Why cheap out on Puig, Cespedes, and Abreu, and go for the lessor player at a similar price? Edited by Palodios

Exactly. Except I'm not sure that the Sox cheaped out on those players. I believe they lost out on Abreu by "only" 5 mil. in a sealed bid. Who knows?

All the comps mean nothing, really. It's all speculation. If he had been playing in AA or AAA the past few years then maybe these comps could be given some credence.

I doubt that he decides to choose Boston anyway with the Sox having so many outfielders already.

$12M a year is about the FA prices for a MLB starter. Hopefully he isn't Julio Lugo with the bat.

All I know is that Cespedes' numbers trumped his and jose abreu weren't even comparable. The sox must see something because if he doesn't have power and is a 250 hitter, we wasted a lot of dough.

So where does he go to play?

He has not played since 2012. I can't believe that he is ready for MLB at bats. The minor league season are almost over. I see failure in the near term for this guy but I hope I'm wrong.

7 years at 27 years old. That mean the Sox are on the hook to this lump until he's 34!!! Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

As if the Sox brass has not stepped in doggy doo enough recently. He better work out!!!!

If I was Jon Lester, I would be pissed.

A playoff proven ace with World Series experience, and a birth certificate with his real age was offered 70 million.

An unproven Cuban player getting 72 million and 7 years at age "27".

You keep saying this, but it is not true.

I have only stated what I have read about him on ESPN Boston and Boston.com.

Either their stories are inaccurate or they are lying.

Wow so I guess Boston will be known as Cuba North for 2015. This is surprising. And yes, I'd be pissed if I were Lester.

Obviously the Sox are now going to sign Cespedes to a long term deal and send him along with Castillo, a position prospect, and a pitching prospect ( why not Buch?!!! ) to Miami for Stanton. The Sox eat a large chunk of the contracts for the two Cubans.

It's a natural fit for the two Cuban players because of the huge Cuban population.

Get it done Ben.

Just call me GM Spud!!!:P

" But it's been a while since Castillo has seen game action. He last played in Cuba in 2012, and ended the year on suspension."

Eric Wilbur is a liar!!!!!!!!

This has me wondering about a couple of things. How close is he to being ready to play and the suspension has me wondering if he is a bad apple.

I've been seeing stats for 2013.

he could be suspended like many Cubans for trying to defect.

Or for any dang old reason, it's an authoritarian state.....! They can do WTF they like.

As far as good deal or not, all we've seen of him is a grainy 3:00 minute Youtube video so I'm not going to question the Sox judgement at this point. They've obviously scouted him extensively. Only cost us money, not a player. And the Sox offered Lester $17.5 million a year, not $12 (4/$70), so not sure why he would be any more pissed than he may have been with his offer previously. I'm just wondering if this means they won't be trying to sign Cespedes for post-2015....

I heard this am that we will see Castillo in the majors this year. Might as well, give him some starts in AAA and call him up in mid-September....

Personally I find the comments about Lester being pissed kind of amusing. Partly for the reasons you mentioned, partly because he knows somebody is going to be paying him $120 million or more starting next year.

Hopefully, the success that other Cubans have been having the Sox have with Castillo. The yearly salary is only around 10 mil so if this guy can hit it will not be that bad of a contract. I can not take too many more games like last night. Almost no hit again!

How about some pitching?

Actually, I think the young guys have done ok - Buchholz is the one that has really stunk it up - amazing, considering the opportunity he has to be staff leader (if not ace). But he doesn't have the mental capacity / make-up to be a front-of-the-rotation guy, IMHO. He could be a good 4th or 5th starter, which is a shame because I think he has 1 / 2 stuff. RDLR pitched well last night, I like Kelly's stuff and make-up a lot, and I think Workman can be a 4 - 5 guy. I still need to see more of Webster. It would be nice to pick up a 1 / 2 guy (but please not 'Big Lame' James Shields) but if they could get a 2 - 4 guy or two, I think the rotation might be okay next year, especially if the offense reverts to Red Sox norms.

But I may be viewing the pie in the sky and drinking my half-full glass of water while wearing my rose colored glasses here.

Rubby has been a bright spot. Webster still has a lot of work to prove that he can have the consistent command needed to be in the majors. Kelly wasn't our farmhand. The biggest disappointment has been XB and Bradley are two most highly valued prospects. There is no sugar coating their crashing to the earth.
